She is a working professional making 40k a year who has just moved from a big city to a smaller city (and from one job to another within the same industry). In the big city she used public transit; in her new job she will need a car.

She is looking for something like the Pontiac Vibe or the Hundai Tooson (mis-spelled). What are your thoughts on various cars of these types?

Honda Civic (assuming she is asian) or Toyota Corolla

Do they charge extra to put the second C on forward?

I agree. Honda's are built to last BUT at the same time, I think they top the list of the most frequently stolen car in the U.S.

Think logically about why this would be the case.

i like hatchbacks. the pontiac vibe and the toyota matrix are effectively the same vehicle. the vibe does look better, but its resale may be worse because of the brand. scions and mazdas are other popular choices in the area.

Mazda! Either a 3 or a 6. They are sporty little cars- I've had Mazdas since I learned to drive one. I now have the RX8 but it's a little costly. Seriously, everyone forgets about Mazda, but they're a great company.

Don't let her buy any of those cheap ass asian pieces of [censored]... Hyundais, Kias, Daewoo, their all piles of dogdung and their warranties are worthless.

Does she have kids? Is fuel econ an important buying aspect?

Late Model Ford Tauruses are generally pretty good cars, although they tent to have trans issues around 100k. They are pretty dependable for the most part and relatively inexpensive to repair and insure. Resale value is a downer though, as there are tons of them on the road today.

Be more specific and I may be able to help you more.

She does not have kids and is not looking to have them within this vehicles lifetime. Fuel econ is relatively important but it's not the be all and end all. She is practical, so resale is important I imagine. Thanks for your help so far.

I think the joke is that Honda Civics (and integras) tend to dominate the most frequent stolen. car list. Of course this is mainly a numbers issue.
