Just for a little background information. I live in a small apartment complex in a college town. It isn't close to the downtwon area, but there are a few ghettos nearby. In the last 4 months there have been numerous robberies in the neighborhood, i.e. cars getting broken into, grills getting stolen off back porches etc...

I have met with an officer twice, once after my grill was stolen and another time after my neighbors car got broken into about a week ago. He asked us during that time if we were going to be in town during the holidays, because he said that holidays are when most of the theifs love to hit student apartment complexes (obviously b/c most of them are out of town)

Come to today, the day before thanksgiving, and probably 75% of people in this neighborhood are gone. I wake up today around 2pm to an old Marroon 4-door driving slowly around the complex honking his horn every 30 feet or so. He circles the place 3 times, honking his horn every circle.

The only thing I can gather from this car is that he was doing this to try to find out who is home and who isn't. I have a good feeling that there might be some robberies in this area tonight, but I don't really know what to do next.

So far the only thing I've done was call the police department and let them know about the suspicious activity and described the car to them as best I could. They said they would send a squad car over to patrol the area a bit, but I'm thinking they won't have one patrolling here at night when the robberies are most likely.

Any ideas of anything else I could/should do?

I read this as girls getting stolen... and had to do the old double take. Hardly minor thefts when your girls are stolen.

Get a gun and an attitude, that's what we do in Texas. If the [censored] comes near you, cock that bitch and ask him if he wants to meet his maker or if he wants to put the car stereo down.

Flick the lights on and off a few times throughout the evening so that there's less chance you'll turn a corner and find one of these guys already in your house. Keep more lights on than usual, including after you've gone to sleep. Seeing activity around might make people less likely to do things in the next place over, too, which could be a help to your immediate neighbors.

Take your outdoors stuff in.

Hop on the phone to the cops when necessary.

Put some hickish stickers outside your door/windows. EG, "Guns save lives," "I <3 Bush," and something about hunting.

So I stayed up pretty late last night, til around 5:30am. I was blaring music while I played some p#$@r last night, loud enough that you faintly hear it outside, just to let any thieves know that I was home. I peered out the window every 30 minutes or so to see if I saw that car rolling around or anything else suspicious. I saw nothing so I figured they didn't come back last night.

I was wrong. I checked my car today when I got up, and of course the tailgate of my truck was half open. I have a truck cap on the bed of my truck, and I have some stuff back there (nothing expensive) It looked as if they tried to force open the tailgate, but to no avale. No broken windows or scratches, so all seems well. But I'm really curious who's car got broken into here last night, I'm sure someones did. I have a Ford Ranger and the locks are really hard to 'slim jim' open, but some cars are a piece of cake.

So I ask you again, should I call the cops and tell em about the tailgate? Any ideas on what I should do tonight, b/c I know these [censored]s are out there?

I just got off the phone with a friend of mine who has friends that live right accross the street from me in another apartment complex. The thieves weren't successful breaking into my truck, but apparently, they were successful in breaking into three apartments and numerous vehicles in that complex.

I now have an even scarier update -

The apartment that was broken into in the adjoining complex had numerous guns (pistols and semi-auto weapons), and all of them were taken. So now its really great that these thieves are now armed.

No surprise that it's "u"ga.

P.S. Sorry about your situation. I know how it goes. It's really a helpless feeling.

P.P.S. That SUCKS about the guns. Though they probably won't use them in your area, it's still too bad.

I seriously doubt they will use the guns in this area, but just knowing that they could be armed when robbing my shat scares me. I mean, it even feels uncomfortable to go outside to my car. The last thing I wanna do is walk up on armed idiots and surprise them.

You should definately call the cops and tell them. It probably won't help you out at all in the short term, but the more calls that they get about your area, the more likely they are to assign extra patroles to it.
