View Full Version : First LP / Cassette / CD / MP3

As I sit at my computer reviewing my mp3’s for songs that I want/need and don’t have yet, I started to think about the first album (LP in my case) I bought on my own free will (not a gift). I realized that I have purchased music in four different forms of media over the years (LP, cassette, CD, and mp3) (No 8-track, DAT, or mini-disc). I was also amazed that I remembered what each purchase was fairly distinctly. I guess since music imprints so strongly in our memory that this shouldn’t be that big of a surprise after all.

Do all of you remember your first purchases of each type? What were they? (If you never “bought” a MP3, the first one you ripped then) How did your taste in music evolve over the years? Here are mine to get started:

Album: Flash Gordon – The Movie Soundtrack
Cassette: Quiet Riot – Metal Health
CD – Elvis Costello – Spike
MP3: Tenacious D - Self-Titled

Quite a mix over the years...

I bought my first 2 cds on the same day:

Bad Brains- The Youth Are Getting Restless
Slayer- Seasons in the Abyss

I think both were upgrades from tapes.

This is kind of funny, because Ray Parker Jr was sued for the tune "Ghostbusters" by Huey Lewis because it was a rip-off of "I Want A New Drug," which is on "Sports."

BTW, I think the first CD I bought was Bob Seger, "Nine Tonight," but I can't really remember.

I joined the Columbia House record club. 8 albums for a penny (double albums count as 2). I remember I got five, so I got 3 doubles. The ones I remember are:

Who - Quadrophenia
Stones - More Hot Rocks
Yes - Yessongs (3 counted as 2)
Steely Dan - Pretzel Logic (They shipped the quadrophonic version)

I have no idea what the other one was, it was probably R&B or Jazzish.

Cassette: Frank Zappa - Weasels ripped my flesh

I never owned an 8-track.

CD I think was Pearl Jam - Vitalogy. I was a late adopter of that technology.

Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercial and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consumate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far much more bitter, cynical sense of humor. In '87, Huey released this, Fore, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip to be Square", a song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it's also a personal statement about the band itself.

first Vinyl LP that I picked out...as opposed to one my parents bought me? - That would be Air Supply - The One that you Love. I think the first record I ever got was some 4 record collection of Bible Stories, but the first one I ever chose was Air Supply. I don't know which I'm more ashamed of.

First cassette? - I think my mom ordered it from Columbia Rcd. club - The Police - Synchronicity. My taste was improving.

My first CD - Actually, before I bought a CD player, I started buying CD's and dubbing them on borrowed equipment. The first CD I can ever recall buying is the Beatles - Magical Mystery Tour. - after watching the movie at the Library in Minneapolis on one of those VHS decks they let you watch checked out movies at.

Come to think of it, I need to buy the DVD for that - I'm sure my years of watching movies will give me a new appreciation for it's creativity.

First MP3 - I remember downloading Napster - it MAY have been some Vigilante of Love bootlegs - but I don't recall for sure.

Christ...I must be the oldest [censored] in this place...

1st album I actually purchased with my own money: Cheap Trick(dont remember the name though, it had the song "Surrender" on it...)

1st 8 track: BTO

1st cassette: The Jimi Hendricks Experience: Are you Experienced?

1st CD: The Clash: London Calling(my album got warped)

1st MP3: Still stuck with CD's (at the moment)

1st album I actually listened to: Cream: The Best of Cream(still one of the best albums ever made)

Based on your answers I'd guess I'm older.

What no category for 8-track. [censored], you guys are young.

Album: Beatles '65 (one of the crappy U.S. releases of their work) or Elvis Presley Gold Records

8-track: Some Grateful Dead album.

Tape: Many dubs of Who albums were given to me; can't remember the first one that I bought.

CD: Beatles, Rubber Soul; Squeeze, Argy Bargy & East Side Story; and Elvis Costello, Imperial Bedroom (all on the same day that I got my first CD player).

MP3: Trash Can Sinatras rarities downloads from Napster.
