Tonight I saw Woody Allen's 1998 (or so) flick Sweet and Lowdown. It is a fake documentary about the (fake) second best jazz guitarrist of the 1930s.

The narcissistic ego-driven kleptomaniac jazz guitarrist in played by Sean Penn and the movie features a brief appearance by Uma Thurman. It doesn't really go anywhere or do anything but tell the story, which was too repetitive and borderline trite since certain traits of characters were so overexaggerated. The acting is very good and certain parts are very funny although you're not sure whether you should laugh at them. The music to the film is great if you like early jazz and especially guitar. I am buying the soundtrack as we speak.

I give this movie one thumb up and one thumb sideways. If you're in the mood to sit by a fire with a glass of line and relax and listen to music while watching a tale with quirky, relatable characters, watch it. The thumb sideways is just becasue some traits are overexaggerated and repetitive and this can get boring. If you're looking for action, do not see this movie. Also the style of a fake documentary with radio experts is kind of stupid in my opinion. I'd much rather just have Penn act it out than have some stupid fake broadcaster segue into each new scene. This part seems like weak writing (sorry Woody).

FYP. I challenge anyone to try to play Minor Swing with three fingers and tell me otherwise. I think the only reason he isn't recognized by most is because A. Other things were going on at the time of his fame. and B. His music doesn't really play for most people these days. Maybe he'll get recognized when Bow Wow samples Django for his latest bling-bling video with special guest star LilKim and Beoncareisaiahafiquamosolama Jones.

limehouse blues always stood out to me as a 'wtf, 3 fingers?' thing

funny you should mention it, though. in the halloween episode of smallville this year (epsiode title: thirst) i believe it was minor swing that was actually used as the main sample in a modern song. iirc, it was played at an entry point to a party scene.

Phil Keaggy, another unfairly good guitarist, is missing a finger on one of his hands. it's amazing how they can still play.

any character who takes his dates to the dump to shoot rats is ok in my book.
