A few programs, like zonealarm and firefox's download manager are always minimized and I can't restore them. Anyone know how to fix this? With zonealarm it acts as if it is maximizing when I click on maximize or restore but it looks like it does it off the desktop. Download manager does nothing and just remains being an icon on my toolbar.

If a program is running in the background, like Zone Alarm might be (I don't have it), then it will be minimized on your sys tray. In order to open it, you have to double click on the icon as you would normally do to run a program. If it actually shows in your task bar but won't maximize, then some glitch has occurred and you need to use the task manager via Cntrl/Alt/Del to kill it, and then restart it.

Tried all that, no dice. I have two programs that chronicly do this. Zonealarm looks like it maximizes (it does a maximizing animation) but it goes off the desktop.

Are they showing up on your taskbar though like other applications you are running, or in the systray, or only in the task manager?

It is also possible that one or more of the program files has been corrupted and might have to be reinstalled.

Taskbar. Zonealarm will start out in the tray and when I click on maximize it does that faux maximizing animation to somewhere off the desktop and places an icon on the taskbar. Download manager is always on the taskbar and is non responsive to restoring it.

Have you tried to use 'Alt-Tab' to see if that opens up the minimized window?

I will now fall back on the old tech support standby:

corruption. reinstall.

if your windows are opening off the edge of the screen, try moving them with the keyboard. Click on the taskbar button to make that window active. Press alt+space, then m. You can now move your window with the arrow keys. Try holding down each arrow so it repeats and see if your window comes in from "off the edge"
