View Full Version : Gillette is releasing a 5-blade razor...

This is not exactly new, but I havent seen it posted up here and I noticed there was a topic discussing what was the best razor you could get. It seemed that almost everyone said the Mach3 and its variants was hands down the best razor you could get. Would you give you the 5-blade Fusion a try? Or would you not solely on how ridiculous it is to use 5 blades?

I knew it! The engineers at Gilette were KICKING themselves after they released the Mach 3 and Schick came out with the Quattro. Now they have their revenge.

I got paid $3 to take an opinion survey about the Fusion advertisements that are in magazines. They basically showed me the same ads, but one was sideways, and I had to give feedback to which caught my eye better.

I can see this being like the 7-minute abs in 'There's something about Mary'

"Guys, were going to...wait for it...5-blade razors!"

"That's right. That's - that's good. That's good. Unless, of course, somebody comes up with 6-blade razors. Then you're in trouble, huh?"

"No! No, no, not 6! I said 5. Nobody's comin' up with 6!!!"

Do you know how Gillette makes each razor better than the last?

Quality of the blades. They basicaly put blades that arnt as sharp and go blunt quicker (read cheaper) and are made of inferior steal etc into there old razors and put the good stuff only into their latest creation.

If you could find one of Gilletes older razors but with the blades it had when it was first release it would give you just a good a shave as a Mach 3 currently does.

The reason they do this is simple. Notice how the blades and the thing they go into get steadily more expensive? Gillete cant just release a razor and then sit back, it has to keep selling us new and expensive razors to make $$$$$$$. It does this by basicaly nerfing the razors for older shavers. Thus you are basicaly forced to go out and spend X on a new razor if you want a decent shave.

On release date there has been basicaly no improvement in performance over the last 3 generations of razor and most the new features are gimmicks.

I think they were always going to do this, and have a 40 year plan for the rollout of "new" products. What else are you going to do to make disposable razors seem "exciting?" They also know what they're going to roll out 5 years from now.

Great article in the Onion. I think SNL did a skit about three blades when Gillette went to two. Then Gillette went to three. So SNL did some crazy "ocho" skit or something. Hilarious. I can't wait to buy it 'cause I'm a hairy mofo.

The adverts for these kind of razors always say something like: "5 blades, each cuts closer than the last". If that's the case, why not just put the closest shaving one (i.e. the last one) in the razor and take out all the rest? What are the other 4 supposed to be: some form of shaving foreplay? They need to think their PR through a bit better...

Here is a tip for anyone that uses a razor. After each use, put the blades in mineral oil. You will get a good 3 months use out of one blade. I don't know what it is about the oil, but it does not allow the blade to go dull. Just do a google search and you can see that this works. At places like sharper image you can buy some rip off fluid that claims to do the same thing, but this is basically mineral oil. A huge bottle will cost you 4 bucks at your local drugstore.

This works for me and I have the fastest, thickest beard growth of anyone I have ever seen....I can literally grow a full beard in like 8 days........

In all seriousness I applaud this idea. The multi-blade stuff is ridiculous. When 2 and 3 blades came out, they said it was better because you didn't have to go over the same spot on your face multiple times, thus reducing irritation. Well I'm pretty sure going three strokes with one blade will be less irritating than one stroke with five blades. But I was no math major, so I could be wrong.

From Greg Easterbrook, Tuesday Morning Quarterback:
[ QUOTE ]

When Gillette bought naming rights to the stadium the Patriots play, the state of the art was three-bladed razors. Yours truly began calling the facility Next One Will Have Four Blades Field. Then Gillette competitor Schick actually offered a four-blade razor, so yours truly began calling the facility Next One Will Vibrate Field. Then....

My obvious move would be to predict a six-bladed razor. But if the new version already has dangerous power and internal electronics, the pace of razor technology is clearly accelerating. Moore's Law holds that the number of transistors in a given space of computer chip doubles every two years. Maybe we need a similar law for razors. Here is TMQ's Law of Razors: The number of blades will increase to the factorial of the highest number of blades in the previous century. My incredibly scientifically advanced reasoning? The 20th century saw a progression from one to three blades. The factorial of three is six (1 x 2 x 3), predicting with seer-like assurance that a six-bladed razor will be marketed sometime in the 21st century. Taking into account that the 21st century has already witnessed the five-bladed razor, we employ the factorial of five (1 x 2 x 3 x 4 x 5) to predict that the 22nd century will see a 120-blade razor. Meanwhile, I will now call the stadium in question...

Updated: 1:52 p.m. ET June 2, 2005
ST. LOUIS - Gillette Co. ads claiming its M3Power razor raises hair up and away from the skin are "unsubstantiated and inaccurate," a federal judge said in siding with Gillette's chief competitor, Schick-Wilkinson Sword.

U.S. District Judge Janet C. Hall in Bridgeport, Conn. granted Schick a preliminary injunction prohibiting the use of the television and print ads. Gillette was also ordered to change packaging for the product and remove in-store displays that feature the false claims.

Hall's ruling on Wednesday said the depiction in Gillette advertising was "greatly exaggerated" and "literally false."

Gillette spokeswoman Michele Szynal said the company has not decided whether to appeal.

"Right now the ruling won't have any affect on our marketing since the visuals don't appear on any (current) advertising or point-of-sales material," she said.

The M3Power, a high-tech, vibrating men's razor introduced early last year to compete with Schick's Quattro razor, held a 20 percent global share last quarter and was the world's top-selling razor, Boston-based Gillette said.

Schick is a division of St. Louis-based Energizer Holdings Inc., and is the world's second-largest maker of wet shave products behind Gillette. Schick-Wilkinson Sword president Joe Lynch said Gillette's claims for the M3Power "go well beyond the capabilities of the products.

"We firmly believe that since the day the M3Power was launched a year ago, Gillette has deceived consumers about the performance of this product," Lynch said.

But Szynal said the computer-generated image of the razor lifting hair away from the skin was never meant to be taken literally.

The two razor makers have tangled in court before, including a long patent fight over whether Schick's four-bladed Quattro and Quattro for Women razors violate Gillette's patent for a multi-blade system. Gillette has claimed that any razor head with three or more blades would be covered by its patent.

In April, a federal appeals court told a lower court to reconsider its decision allowing Energizer to continue selling the Quattro razor while the patent dispute plays out.

A lot, a WHOLE lot, of people, grind electric razors into their faces and have all kinds of problems because of it. This is the kind of thing that could easily get you ingrown hairs, too.

But just running the thing lighter on your face can probably get you by without that problem. Three light passes is better than one or two grinds and holds.
