is there some kind of existing thread outlining what people do with taxes? This is the first year I have to claim significant income with poker.

The reason why I ask is because I work a 40k/year day job and I made about 10k this year playing cards thus far as a side gig. Are paying taxes something I should be worrying about at this point?

yes.

this should go in the zoo (as others will point out). check out cardplayer.com, they have a good taxes section.

take the 10k and hire a good accountant to do your taxes. He will likely save you more than his fees. If you spend the hours you would have spent figuring out taxes playing poker you will save even more.
