Whenever I download software using the firefox browser, it always asks me to install the effing Google toolbar. I never get to download (or install rather) the software I want. What up?

Eh? Can you give more description or screenshots maybe?

I'll try and get some screenshots later.

Last night for example, I wanted to download the LAME MP3 encoder. I can't do with my firefox browser. I have to open Internet Explorer. If I try to download the software with Firefox I get what appears to be a legitimate Google toolbar installer. It asks me if I accept the terms and conditions, blah, blah, blah...

The official Google one? Or the firefox extension? You could just install it. It's pretty useful.

I've used FF for quite some time now, and have never been asked to install the google toolbar or extension.

I'd be very wary of simply installing.

Check this (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=fake+google+toolbar+installer&b tnG=Search) out.
