Maybe all these guilt-ridden, tormented believers who run to confessionals, atone for their sins constantly, pray for forgiveness, etc etc. Maybe they are on to something.
Perhaps we are punished for believing in stupid things whether they turn out to be true or not. In other words, just say the story of Adam and Eve turns out to have been accurate. Its still an unbelievably stupid story that no intelligent person could possibly take seriously.
A just universe would punish idiots who believe that story.
So maybe--just maybe we win either way. If it isn't true, no worries because there is no bearded man in the sky.
On the other hand, if it is true, maybe we STILL aren't expected to believe it because it is so patently ridiculous. That means the believers are screwed. That possibility is at LEAST as likely as the bible being divinely inspired.
