Charge the users a fee to give them access to it if you have to. Your search engine sucks. I just spent 26 minutes looking for a thread for Schneids. Never again...

1. http://www.google.com
2. in the text box, type: "blah blah blah site:forumserver.twoplustwo.com"
3. Profit.

If Matt or whoever runs this site wants to add a google search, they can do that too. But there's absolutely no need to buy an appliance for that.

would you need the big one?

No.

This works about 1% as well on twoplustwo as what I imagine the full version to be like.

Google Enterprise Announces Search Replacement Program

Google today announced a search replacement program whereby any business that replaces its existing search solution with a Google Search Appliance by the end of the year will receive a free Google Mini. More than 2,000 businesses worldwide use Google's search products to deliver Google-quality search results to customers, employees and partners.

"Given the recent turmoil with providers of legacy search solutions, there has never been a better time to upgrade your company's search to Google," said Dave Girouard, general manager of Google Enterprise. "This program allows companies to upgrade both their internal and public-facing search solutions all in one quick step."

The Google Search Appliance is an integrated hardware and software search solution that enables corporations, universities and government agencies to deliver Google-quality search results on their corporate network and public websites. To find out more information about Google's replacement program, please visit www.google.com/switch. (http://www.google.com/switch.)

Admit it. You use google to search for pr0n and your friends' blogs, don't you.

Sure I do (well, the porn anyway). Your comment about the hardware that google sells was retarded though. It's not the same.

No kidding it's not the same. It's an enterprise class intranet/internet search solution that's also been scaled down to meet the needs small to medium businesses. Here's retarded - asking the admins of a p***r siteto shell out $3k because you can't be bothered to figure out how to find what you're looking for via google already.

Like I said - ask the admins to throw down a google search link (ala sendmail.org or 10,000 other sites) or add some already freely available search code. Buying a search appliance for a publicly available and relatively small site is what's retarded.

I like the idea. Would they need the $3,000 one or the $30,000 one? If its the small one, I'm sure whe can get 300 people to chip in $10 each, I'd do it.

Hell, even if I loved the search function, I'd be in favor of charging a fee to use the website. A big fee.

If it pays for a better search function, all the better.

I sent this to Matt a while back and it all came down the dolla bill.

The X1 search engine is 100x BETTER!

we have it deployed throughout my enterprise and it OWNS Google!

wacki, good idea in principle, but it is one which would be a horrible business move. If they charged people to use this site, traffic would go way down, advertising fees would go way down, visibility goes way down. 2p2 should get this, but charging people, come on man.

What's so confusing? They could set up a more powerful search tool, and allow those of us to subscribe to it to do so. they could cover the cost of the software, and access to the site would not be restricted.

ThaSaltCracka

so you are saying there should be two search engines? No offense bro, but that is just retarded.

11-11-2005, 10:45 PM
I think you would see people who don't pay getting the people that do to search for them. I don't like this idea. I support a fee for being able to post at all.

Ahhhh...you were searching the archive server. The problem is that it's dynamically generated content, so the google mini or google site wouldn't be able to find what you're looking for anyway. You're kind of hosed on that front.

-- Edit: I spoke too soon. The app does support dynamic content, but I'm more curious as to why google didn't index the page you're looking for. It should have. --

Assuming the content is stored in some database, then the 2+2 mods would have to buy the larger Google Search Appliance rather than the mini, which appears to start at $30k.

"The Google Search Appliance is designed for larger businesses and can support up to 15 million documents. The Search Appliance also includes a variety of features such as direct database indexing, continuous crawling, unlimited search collections, RAID (to provide continued service in the event of hard disk failure) and support for user-level document security."

But hey - it comes with RAID.

I don't understand why anyone would vote against. This is the biggest improvement 2+2 could make.

If there is a problem money wise, what about making the arcives, or archive search, available for a fee?

I voted yay, but what makes anyone think that 300 or 3000 people will pay to search archives?

I am very curious how many people use the search and how often? Just to browse past the first ten pages or to find relavant info?

Before we consider anything like this, we are redesigning the website. That should occur in the next two months or so. Then I want to look into better software.

I assume that different message board software will have improved search function. Am I right about that?

Also, does anyone have any recommendations about new software?

imo you should make a new post about the redesign as you are likely to get some pretty good input on what ppl want/recommend.
