Having a hard time deciding this, as I think they are all great. I do have a favorite though, and one that I feel is the least good. Lets see what OOT thinks!

Correct answer: Marvel pre-1995.

Curious as to why you specify "pre-1995"?

Other's that should have made the list:

Cerebus
Human Target
Planetary
Watchmen

I didn't mind Age of Apocolypse but the Spider-Man clone saga was pretty lame and everything after that just started getting stupid. Granted I haven't picked up a comic since '97 or so but last I remember Marvel was like restarting the numbering system or something?

Recently though I've been told by numerous people that the comic "100 Bullets" is supposed to be superb so maybe I'll pick up my first TPB in a long time. Ah that might be nice.

I just wanted to say that I have the original Sin City comics in their serialized form in Dark Horse Presents, somewhere in my parents' house.

Marvel actually got a lot better in the 00's, although some of their titles have slipped a bit again recently. 100 Bullets is great. D.C. has been pretty great the past 16 months or so, too. Maybe check out the Identity Crisis TPB.

The early 100 Bullets are great. I stopped about 5 issues ago as it lost the appeal to me long term. So, start at the beginning and work your way to present.

Did 100 Bullets finish?

There was some good stuff that I was enjoying when I kinda dropped comics cold turkey.

Planetary, 100 Bullets, Outlaw Nation. All books that I was enjoying when I left.

Also- Ellis's original 12 issue run on The Authority, and the Stormwatch stuff leading up to it was pretty awesome.

You missed out. They can be terrifically imaginative. Though not many, especially of the superhero type, would appeal to most adults who've moved on. But the form inherently has great potential and has given a lot of kids a huge amount of imaginative fun.

I assumed you weren't going for a "best of" just "best of this group"

If you were going for "best of" then your list is horrible and needs to die.

Also.

It's not really the same flavor, but Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Boy on Earth (or whatever the exact title) is the best thing ever.

How come Dane Cook and Dave Attell aren't on the list? They're my favorites.

I haven't read in quite some time...but I used to really enjoy 100 Bullets, Daredevil, and Batman. Punisher was amusing as well...

I think I'll start again maybe when the Dark Tower comics come out. I enjoyed the books.

Why is Watchmen not on this list? Seriously, Terry Giliam wanted to make a nine hour miniseries out of it because it's so damned good. And hell, at least put The Dark Night Returns on the list too. Those comics revolutionized comicdom.

I voted for Preacher. Pretty damned entertaining, but the ending was slightly unsatisfying.

Frank Miller's damned good with his gritty, pulp noir stuff, but he's pretty one dimensional.

I just can't believe you totally shafted Alan Moore.

Yeah I was actually going for a best of this group, I just didn't remember include Sandman even though I think it fits nicely in there.

After thinking about it though I'm glad I didn't include Sandman, it would just get most of the votes because everyone has heard of it.

Yes as a "best of" list, this list would be very incomplete, although I think all these are excellent, especially in the "around 8-12 issue long story that ends there" category. (Hellblazer and Sin City aren't in this category, but similar)

As I said this was a "best of these 5 list".

Watchmen is not on the list because I haven't read it yet, and I was interested about what people though about the comics I listed.

The Dark Knight Returns is awesome, but I didn't include it because I don't compare it to the comics listed, as it is only two magazines, not a series. (correct me if I'm wrong here)

Preacher is a good pick. As you said, very entertaining. I enjoyed it immensely.

Of these I voted Hellblazer. My favorite is probably Judge Dredd.
