The use of "matriculation"

The dude on sportcenter always says something like "he matriculated the ball down the field." I was always under the impression that to matriculate meant to enroll at a school. Is there some other accepted meaning of "matriculate" that I'm missing out on here? Or is the ESPN dude an [censored]?
