View Full Version : Differing open-raise amounts depending on blind level?

Well obviously this is the case, but I'm talking about # of BB.

The general rule is 3xBB, and I used to just use this (or push) every time. However, I found that at early levels, 3xBB was often not enough to discourage a whole gaggle of callers. And later on, it tended to be a bit overkill, so 2.5BB or maybe less was a more appropriate amount.

Do you adjust your raises as the blinds go up? If so, how much? I think there is some advantage to be gained here without too much difficulty.

I'll usually raise the upper range of 3-4BB, varying by position a bit.

So with the blinds at 200/400 you raise to 1500? Yikes.

No, if you raise anything, you should go all in.

This is all Level 4 and earlier.

EDIT: By Level 4 I'm usually raising 3BB.

Obviously raising different amounts will get different reactions depending on buyin level. I've found that at the 10s, a raise of ~100 will attract 1-2 callers in levels 1 and 2. In level 3, I tend to raise to 150 and in level 4 about 250 if I'm not pushing. That raise of 150 in level 3 seems to be very profitable, I'm constantly surprised by how many times I'll easily pick up the blinds with it as most people seem to realize how often they need to be willing to commit their whole stack once they call it.

levels 1 and 2 are really the only times I overbet as the donks at the 10s really don't respect raises below 100.

of course, every situation is different and depending on stack sizes the "correct" raise size varies.
