Could someone explain the "point" of a blind? Particularly with texas hold'em? Thanks

In any poker game, someone needs to be forced to put money in the pot. Some games have antes, where everyone pays. Other games have blinds, where only certain players pay. There are some small stud games where there is no ante, but there is a 'bring-in', where the lowest upcard has to bet a small amount.

All poker games need some kind of "forced bet", otherwise people would fold everything except the best starting hands.

As far as why hold'em has blinds instead of antes, I'm not sure, but I would say that since position is so important in hold'em, making the players with the worst position pay the blinds helps make up for their poor position by allowing them to play more hands (since it costs them less to call and see the flop).
