View Full Version : Finally abandoning FM radio

I've recently completely given up on FM radio. I still listen to numerous AM programs, but I will be purchasing Satellite of some sort this weekend, probably Sirius due to the Howard Stern thing.

I usually only listen to music off my own CDs or IPOD, but occassionally give the radio a chance. Recently, my girlfriends younger sisters came to town, and they absolutely hate listening to CDs so I had to go with the radio on several long car rides. They don't have much preference as far of type of music, so I basically spent the weekend flipping through all the San Diego channels.

The rock stations all now play some sort of terrible whiny-voice bands, same playlist every hour. The classic rock stations have seemingly completely abandoned the notion of exploring older songs that most people can't sing along with the chorus. And the rap stations...wow...the rap stations. I heard "Laffy Taffy" and several songs where "Mike Jones" was repeated 100 or so times, and all the songs were just basically terrible. All of the channels play the same 1-2 hour rotation with very little variation, and all the DJs/promotions have become completely unbearable.

So I gave up. I doubt I'll ever listen to FM radio for >10 minutes for years to come. Anybody else have any thoughts on this?

Yeah my I'm assuming I'm late on this one. But I've been slowly getting off for a while. I just gave up completely though.

Well, I think its important to understand that he doesn't exactly "take days off". I think days take him off. Like today, he was suspended for mentioning Sirius too often. I really didn't want to listen to a shitty old Crash Test Dummies interview.

Seeing as all I listen is sportstalk radio I've completely given up on FM a long time ago, kinda makes me feel old.

As far as music goes I really can't stand the stuff that is playing on the air today. Seeing as I don't listen any mainstream music anyways this wasn't hard.

wow, he was suspended today? im guessing youre sure it wasn’t for election day?? as I seem to recall him being off every friggin election day. and if it was for talking up Sirius too much , that’s fine too because I get sick of hearing about it and sick of hearing “ fire me already , I want out!”

if it wasn't for 89.3 The Current (http://minnesota.publicradio.org/radio/services/the_current/) here in Minneapolis, I'd be with you...

Hell, what am I saying....I WAS you - all I listened to were CD's and sometimes some classical if I needed something different -

but that new NPR station is incredible - Like KCRW in Santa Monica - very electic, very artist and music driven - check out the stream on your desktop if you get bored.

They are now #1 preset on my FM radio -- I almost never use the other 11.

as a previous poster said, he was pimping his new Sirius show too much....

He doesn't do anything for me....but for example - last night, the E Online version - they had this incredibly hot british show host strapped in the tickle chair going apeshit about to pee her knickers (her words, not mine) and THAT was FUN as HELL to watch...

but I think it wouldn't be nearly as interesting on radio - you had to be there watching the jugs bounce as she squirmed tied up there in that chair in the tight sweater and the schoolgirl plaid skirt getting tickled like crazy - otherwise, just hearing it you just get a girl screaming.

doh....must take a 30 second break from the PC now - excuse me - got myself all riled up - /images/graemlins/grin.gif

Have you heard the kind of crazy [censored] he's bring to Sirius though? It'll be much better than it is now I think. I mean he's talking about having his classic "Date-a-porn-star" gameshow or whatever, except the winner gets to shag her right in the studio while you listen. There's some good stuff in the works.

I just want to bump this. AWESOME. One of the best things Ive come across in a long time. I accidently downloaded a song by Ten Years After, and didnt really know anyone similar to them....now I do. Awesome. Plus your first 10 hours are free on the site.

Rap stations have been terrible for about 8-10 years now.

I have heard good things about Sirrus stations though. Also, digital cable has good channels.
