View Full Version : Software to calculate integrals

I know this isn't the most ideal forum, but is there any free good software? Or is there really only commercial stuff like Maple/MATLAB to choose from.

If the latter is true, if someone who has either of these could quickly run the integral of sin^6(t) between 0 and pi/2, then I could check my answer, that would also be cool.

just to clarify, you want the integral of sin(sin(sin(sin(sin(sin(t)))))) between 0 and pi/2..., right?

If so, Mathematica gives 0.689173

(Integral of (sin(t))^6 between those limits is 0.490874, but this one can be computed analytically)

Octave (http://www.octave.org/) is a freeware Matlab clone that I've heard good things about... I haven't actually used it myself, but now that I remember it exists I'll probably install it tonight when I get home.

If you PM me, I'll reply with a basic review once I get it up and running (this weekend-ish, maybe?). Conversely, if you use it feel free to let me know your impressions (especially if you are familiar with Matlab)

If f[t] = (5*t)/16 - (15*Sin[2*t])/64 + (3*Sin[4*t])/64 - Sin[6*t]/192,

then f '[t] = (Sin[t])^6,

f[Pi/2] - f[0] = 5 * Pi / 32 ~= 0.490873852123405193509788028637

If you want only the occasional integral, there is integrals.wolfram.com , a demonstration site for Mathematica. (Believe it may only give indefinite integrals, too - but evaluating at the limits is pretty easy when it's sines at 0 and pi/2 we are talking about.)

I'm using a TI-83. I feel all outdated.
OTOH it did give me 0.49087 as well so maybe I won't worry.
