View Full Version : Diagnose Me

I'll only go to a doctor if this lasts longer than a couple of days.

Symptoms:

Certain parts of my body itch terribly - at times my hips, arms, calves, back, neck, in varying degrees of severity. All itchy spots are reddened, some have little bumps.

My glottis (the hanging thing at the back of your mouth) is swollen and it hurts to swallow food and liquid. I can feel how big it is in my throat. (comedians, don't bother)

I brought my fever down with about 12 bottles of water, but there was a fever yesterday.

Muscles are stiff. I'm not coughing but I have a sore throat.

For the time being I'm taking Tylenol Cold/Flu and vitamin C.

Ok, I'll play. My guess is hives from an allergic reaction to something. Do we win something if we're right. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Could be Chicken Pox, if you haven't had it.

If you are indeed having an allergic reaction (ie:the irritated skin) go get some Claritin or, if you can get your hands on some Zyrtec even better.

I second this diagnosis. Are the spots symmetrical on the left & right sides of your body?

Go get an oral antihistamine like diphenhydramine (Benadryl) and use a topical antihistamine like hydrocortisone. This will help with the itching.

Definetly go see a doctor.

Hives most likely, but shingles (brrrrr!) a small possibility.

Consistent with an allergic reaction.

That's your uvula, by the way. Given the other symptoms, this is also consistent with an acute allergic reaction.

Fever and muscle stiffness are also symptoms of an acute allergic reaction. I'm guessing you have chills, too.

Get to the ER if you have trouble breathing (tightness in your chest or throat) or if your fingers/toes start turning blue.

Try Benadryl to treat your current symptoms.

That'll be $485. I don't accept BC/BS.

Glottis covers the opening to the esophagus/trachea when breathing/eating.
Edit: I'm wrong. Epiglottis covers the trachea during eating. Glottis is the opening between the vocal chords.

Around the waist they are, but not elsewhere. itchiness on left shoulder, right forearm, right hand, left ankle, right behind the knee also.

But they'll probably tell you to go spend 6 hours at the ER.

Supposing I were to just keep drinking water and taking OTC medication.

Assuming this is just a flu or something small, would this eventually go away, albeit slower and more painfully than with prescription?

Again, assuming it is a minor illness, what are the repercussions? Will it come back again in a month as pneumonia or something?

I am going to the doctor Wednesday

Better luck next time.

Good thing you got to the doctor. That's nothing to screw around with. Treatable with antibiotics, though.

With these symptoms, I don't see any reason to go to a doctor. I would say at worst it's some strange African virus that you caught after eating that funky curry last friday.
