Enter The Dragon.

What else?

Return of the Dragon (Chuck Norris fight owns) and most other Bruce Lee movies.

Bloodsport is awesome and a pinnacle in terms of tournament style martial art movies. However JCVD is just a big ballerina.

Ong Bak is really cool although there's not a TON of fighting. Muay thai is rad.

Also Sidekick w/ Chuck Norris and Jonathon Brandis of Seaquest DSV fame is an absolute masterpiece (joke).

Once Upon a Time In China Series
Master of the Flying Guillotine

Also I got turned out to this movie "Eight Diagram Pole Fighter" by Kung Fu Cult Cinema (http://www.kfccinema.com/reviews/kungfu/8diagrampole/8diagrampole.html). Excellent.

edit: Also, you can't go wrong with 36 Chambers of Shaolin.

Best single one on one fight scene, definitely best psychological fight scene ever: Bruce Lee vs. Chuck Norris in Return of the Dragon

Other goodies:

Recent:

Hero
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
House of Flying Daggers

Ong Bak, The Thai Warrior

Older:

Drunken Master, the first one, with Jackie Chan -- it's under many different titles; Columbia came out with a crisp and clear version that has an incredible commentary by two kung fu film buffs with lots of personal info on Jackie Chan and his real life upbringing, etc., really great. This is probably the most rewatchable kung fu movie I've ever seen. The ending fight scene with Jackie vs. the super kicker is very long and really extra great.

The Chinese Connection -- Bruce Lee. One great moment after another, and you can see why the Chinese cheered and leaped to their feet when they first saw this one. Probably the one that most made Lee a God in Asia. My favorite of the Lee films.

Once Upon a Time in China, I and II. III is a bit lesser.

Snake in the Eagle's Shadow -- another of Jackie Chan's earliest; great weapons play and superb athleticism from Jackie. Fight scenes filmed the way they should be, like American idiots still can't seem to figure out: with the camera well back and in long takes so you can see the people really move and let the action come from good fight choreography and great athletes instead of some schlub at an editing bay. Some achingly hot Chinese girls in here practically made me wanna cry.

The Leg Fighters -- just what it sounds like, some great kicking. A palpable sense of danger in the story.

The Flying I -- obscure old Shaw Brothers with one of my favorite kung fu stars, incredibly good kicker.

The Five Deadly Venoms -- old classic, with people doing weird styles. Great fun to watch, and the kind of truly evil bastard dudes that some of the old kung fu flicks do so well.

The Octagon -- a passably decent Chuck Norris film, most notable for the Japanese weapons master in it. When he's spinning his weapons around, it's worth sitting through the whole rest of the movie, easy. Too bad we didn't see a lot more of him in other movies, because he was really intense and compelling as hell.

Shaolin Wooden Men -- another good Jackie one. Jackie is a Shaolin student here and of course anything attempting to depict the legendary Shaolin wooden men is fascinating right out of the gate. Another one with really good villains.

I wouldn't classify these as kung-fu per se, more like moving works of art. Chinese visual drama? Dunno, but I'm convinced it's not kung-fu.

Fist of Legend.

It's the American title for an old school Jet Li film, which was a remake of Bruce Lee's "Chinese Connection"

I agree with your high estimation of them, but without the kung fu nobody would have seen them, and they wouldn't even have gotten made. They're kung fu flicks all right.

Bloodsport will always be a classic.

Anything with Donnie Yen or Jet Li will probably satisfy. The early 90's films with these two are fairly decent quality and really good kung fu.

I would not call this a Kung Fu movie. Anyways:

Master Killer (The 36th Chamber of Shaolin) This movie is excellent. I love it. I somehow found the .avi online a year ago. I still have it, great flick.

Shogun Assassin: This is a big compilation of the Lone Wolf & Cub series. It doesn't have much of a storyline due to this, but it's still pretty good.

I saw that when I was a kid and thought it was unbelievably dumb. By now it's become a camp classic. I should see it again, and maybe I would have fun with it despite its stupidity.

Yeah, it's definitely not for everybody. I love the cornyness to it. I recorded it from HBO a long time ago. I think I'll watch it later.

Unrelated, but since you're reading: I think sometime during work last night, something went into my eye. It started watering weird liquid after that and became irritated. The only thing I can think of is when someone broke 2 glass cups very close to me. That's when it started bothering me. I slept about 7 hours and woke up with goup in my eye and it's now very red, bloodshot and painful. Should I buy some eye wash stuff from the store? Doctor?

Yes! I remember always wishing this would be on TV if I was sick from school or something back in grade school. I couldn't find it at Blockbuster. My view of the 80's is from this movie.

Gee, I don't know, except that eye stuff scares me enough to see a doctor about it. Actually the first thing that came to my mind is that it sounds like pink eye.

If you could possibly have glass in there, you'd better have a doctor check it out before it scratches your cornea and messes up your vision.

Yeah, I said it could be pinkeye, too, but my mom said no. She said it's too much of a coincadence that it started bothering me as soon as someone broke some glass.

The doctor in the ER didn't mention anything about pinkeye, either. I'll ask the eye specialist tomorrow. Thanks for your help, Blarg.

ive only seen a few chuck norris movies, and thought he really sucked. then he had that show on television which prevented me from ever giving him any chance. i always thought how could a big goofy white guy from texas really understand kung-fu. Hahahaha, i guess i will have to give him a chance and get some of these films.

there are some great low budget thai movies ive seen recently. i am not entirely sure but it looks like these guys are really getting kicked and punched (i wouldnt be surprised in thailand).

Lone Wolf and Cub stuff.

If no-one's said this yet, we should all be ashamed.

And if anyone sez 'not a kung fu' movie, note 'martial art' in the OP and tell me if a film where a guy takes out an army with swordplay, spearplay and a pram isn't really about 'martial arts'.

11-07-2005, 09:37 AM
doonie yen: wing chun, iron monkey

jet li: last hero in china, once upon a time in china series, swordmen 2, , bodyguard from beijing, fong yai suk.

jackie chan: police story aka super cop (first one), project a 1&2,

others: game of death(cheesy and funny as hell), best of the best, bloodsport, king of begger, the quest

KUNF FU HUSTLE is a must see and is the highest grossing movie in hong kong history.
