Silly little question

I'm a ring game player new to MTTs, and am not sure I understand rebuys.

I thought they were only if you busted out, but I saw someone write that they tried to rebuy right away then sit on the stack for a while.

Does this mean that they can rebuy without busting out?

Or that they gamble early trying to double up, then rebuy if they bust?

Depending on the site... you can rebuy right away. Usually if you're 1500 or less you can rebuy onto your stack. At prima, it's anything the original buy in (1500).

On some sites (and presumably, at some casinos), you can take a rebuy when your stack is less than or equal to the starting stack. So, at stars, you start with 1500 and can pay 1 buy-in to get to 3k, but cannot rebuy again unless you get below 1500.

Also, at party poker, they have an annoying bug that they won't admit to that allows you to rebuy if you go all in even if it's uncalled or you win the hand.

You can also rebuy at Party when you have less than 1000 chips which is usually a pretty good strategy.
