Villain is relatively new to the table. I haven't seen him get out of line at all.

My thinking is that he very likely has a straight. 44 is also possible. I'm getting almost 2:1 on the call, so I found this to be a very difficult laydown. I'm guessing in the long term it doesn't much matter whether I call or fold but I thought I'd see what you guys think.

why can't he have queens up or two pair along w/the 56 or 44 as the hand range from the SB. FWIW, I do know some weak players who complete their blinds w/QQ to make sure overcards don't flop.

Even if that's the case, i still call 80BBs getting 2:1 ish.

Player-dependent, but a turn check is better here sometimes - especially against one of the blinds.

As played, the fold looks OK I guess.

The cold-call of a bet and raise screams flush draw. I wouldn't check this turn behind and let a free river spade or a stray A, 5 or 6 in his hand ruin me. The only time I would consider checking behind here is if the opponent was very, very aggressive, and I could count on picking off a big river bluff bet and he would also not call a big turn bet with a draw.

Whoa! Are you kidding me? I can't believe people like this laydown. I would never fold it for 300 more. He really didn't play it like a set on the flop, IMO, though I don't play these limits much anymore. Maybe they're more passive than I realize. Still, it seems like he could've improved a flush draw, or be making a move on you without improving it. I know I'd try it if I thought you would consider folding a set in this spot.

you're only behind A5s, 56s, or 44 unless villain is a drawing maniac. he can have random two pair holdings so i think you should call here. QQ is very unlikely unless he's super passive preflop. almost getting 2:1 and considering all the possible hands villain could have, i think a call is +EV.

Getting 2:1 odds vs a short-stacked opponent who's quite likely looking for "that one hand" to make big or go home, I'd probably be inclined to call, although the check/coldcall does look scary. However I think there's more than a 50% chance you're ahead here. A fold isn't horrible, but I think a call would've been better. It's also good to occasionally raise pre-fop with hands like that, but I'm sure you know that already.

Are you serious? I can never see reason for a check-behind here. I think you made the right fold, a fold I wouldn't make. This line surely seems like 56s. I only make this laydown if I'm in the zone.

I dont like folding but I can understand your reasoning behind it. It just seems too likely that villan has Q4 or two pair, and puts you on your most likely holding, AQ, KQ or a flush draw. I think you call and win at least 50% of the time. And I dont like checking the turn on that board.
