It's been a while since the last tourney type movie poll, so how about one for westerns. I realize it will probably come down to Unforgiven and the Good, Bad, Ugly, or something like that, but what the heck. Nominate some of your preferred westerns, and we'll get this one going...

To start:

Rio Bravo
High Plains Drifter
Silverado

I think OUATITW is the easy choice.

I think "Unforgiven" is vastly overrated. Yes it's a good movie, but greatest western ever?

The Searchers
Stagecoach
McLintock!
Big Jake
Chism
Sons of Katie Elder
The Undefeated
The War Wagon
Red River

I don't know if it counts, but I always liked How the West was Won.

Outlaw Josie Wales is awesome.
Magnificent Seven may not have been as good as Seven Samurai, but it was still good.

I think the John Wayne/Clint Eastwood factions will have a hard time settling on one film, since both of those guys did so many QUALITY westerns. If you broke this into categories, like "Drama", "Romance", "Comedy", etc., I think the only surefire thing that everybody would agree on is that Blazing Saddles is the best Western comedy ever made.

[/ QUOTE ]

Well, personally I think this category should be allowed to be more open than some of the other specific genre. I think Blazing Saddles (to name one) should be allowed in here, if for no other reason because it was DQ'd from the comedy thread because of being made one year too early. But if there are lots of folks against including comedic westerns we can decide on it later.

My favorite is Fistful of Dynamite (aka Duck You Sucker), but that does not have a chance since hardly anyone has seen it.

I don't think anyone has mentioned Paint Your Wagon.

Most of the great westerns have been mentioned already, I'll try to think of some that haven't.

Cheyenne Autumn (I've never seen it, but I heard it was good)
My Darling Clementine
Fort Apache
Support Your Local Sherrif

I know there are more, but I just can't think of them right now. As an aside, I was just thinking the other day "Sweede needs to do a western poll and mystery movie poll". You should really break this up by decade or into 20 or 25 year blocks. At one point 25% of all US films produced were westerns, it really is the most well developed film genre there is. I would personally have a very hard time picking between say "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" and "Unforgiven". There are just too many great westerns to group them all together, and you will get a lot of bias towards recent films I think if you dont segregate them. (Most people here have probably seen "TGTBATU", but I bet less than have have seen "The Wild Bunch" or "Once Upon a Time in the West".)

For me, this will be the toughest of these polls yet.

Edit - I'm not saying Support Your Local Sherrif was great per se, but it was decent, and pretty good for its era. Also, I didn't see any James Garner films listed, and he did tons of westerns.

Do you consider it more of an adventure movie a la Indiana Jones? I guess I can buy that. If western means set in the 1800's then you have a point, though that would rule out several John Wayne movies that were set in the early 1900's.

Just looked up the Searchers on IMDB, and found this in trivia. I need to watch this again.

"According to John Wayne in a 1974 interview, John Ford hinted throughout the movie that Ethan had had an affair with his brother's wife, and was possibly the father of Lucy and Debbie. This meant Ethan's thirst for vengeance stemmed not from the murder of his brother, but of the woman Ethan had loved. This was so subtle that many viewers at the time missed it altogether."

Once upon a Time in the West is my favourite film of all time. Leone wanted Eastwood to be one of the 3 outlaws at the beginning (which is possibly the most stunning opening sequence ever). So many good ideas went into this film - For Example - just love the way each of the main Characters were given their own theme tune which played each time they were in a Scene.

Personally, I don't think this Film has got anywhere near as much acclaim as it should have (it was lambasted by Film Critics when first released) although it does seem that in the past few years it is beginning to get the plaudits it deserves.

This one time She Wore a Yellow Ribbon was on cable and I TiVo'd it, excited about the prospect of seeing a classic John Wayne western. Thus far, my lifetime western experience had been composed entirely of popular Clint Eastwood movies.

I couldn't even get halfway through it. I was bored out of my mind and eventually deleted it from my TiVo.

Which classic John Wayne western is least likely to bore me to tears?

Finally, since no one mentioned these yet how about the following three:

Unforgiven is not only the best western of all time, it is the best movie of all time.

Ssssoooooooo overrated. Really, WTF?

When Unforgiven came out and everyone talked about how good it was, I thought it was just because there hadn't been a really good Western in so long. It's a fun movie and everything, but come on, the best of all time, really.

As for the extras Swede mentioned, I would say Wyatt Earp is dog-doo-doo, but there really isn't a reason to include it on the list. It's long, which is synonomous w/ good nowadays. Costner is so bad, I can't see the movie doing well.

I thought the general rule was that you should only vote for pairs where you have seen both movies.

Also, your statement is ridiculous unless you have seen all 64 movies on the list.

This is the rule I abide by. Honestly, in this poll there will be quite a few first and second rounders that I won't be voting for; particularly involving the lesser known Wayne movies.

Nice catch! That was The Governator's finest work.

Don't know that it will make the cut (and it doesn't meet some of the requirments discussed e.g. it is set in the 1950's)- but anyone into westerns might want to check out:

Lonley are the Brave (1962)

I am biased towards it because it is based on Ed Abbey's novel The Brave Cowboy. It stars Kirk Douglas as Jack Burns- an old fashioned cowboy in the modern world and Walter Matthau as the sheriff pursuing him.

Kirk Douglas said in the LA times in 1989 "In the more than 60 films that I've made, this is my favorite"
