View Full Version : I forgot to wear a belt

I'm wearing khaki pants and a button-down dress shirt at work. No tie.
I spaced out and forgot to put on my belt.

Do I leave my shirt tucked in and look like a dork, or pull my shirt out and look sloppy?

Take the shirt off.

Tough call. I untuck, because I can't stand the "tucked-in-no-belt" look.

sloppy.

This is why you keep a sweater or something you can wear over the dress shirt, covering your belt-less waist. If this is not an option I have to go with tucked in and dorky looking. Wearing a dress shirt untucked is a worse style offense.

Tuck in the left, and leave out the right. You'll look interesting.

I definitely go sloppy

That is, if no one will yell at you. I don't really know much about dress code etiqutte; I work in an academic lab so some people just wear t-shirts.

I see that I'm definitely in the minority suggesting going tucked in and belt-less. I still think that a workplace with a dress code would be more opposed to someone wearing his shirt un-tucked than a belt-less dork.

Obviously at my job I'd just take my pants off and go Donald Duck style, that way people won't worry about your belt one way or another.

duck out and buy a belt

failing that, tucked in no belt. i've seen it done by my co-workers and I presumed it was just intentional...

I have done this recently, and remained tucked and beltless. Untucking is just giving up altogether.

If your pants are flat-front i.e. no pleats, then tucked-in no-belt is fine and is actually stylish and cool.

If you're rocking the pleats, untuck - and then throw the pants away and buy some flat-fronts after work.

Ahh, the Gretzky. A classic look.

Tuck. Brits do that often. You'll look exotic...and dorky. But that's better than sloppy.

Results:

I start work at about 3:30pm and work until 12 or 1am.
I kept it tucked in until about 6pm, when most of the bigwigs are out of the office.
I'm now untucked and sloppy for the rest of the night.

There's really no dress code per se. But I'm middle management, so I need to look decent I think.

Go buy a belt on the way to work.

I would never tuck with no belt. If you can't buy a belt, pull it out.
