View Full Version : I call upon the power of OOT...

I felt this is a situation so dire that i must ask for the aid of the OOTiots.

Met a girl saturday, she asks for my number. She gets it, we send a shitload of text messages back and forth today. I call her like two hours ago, we decide to meet up tomorrow. Thing is, she wants us to meet where she lives, which is in the middle of nowhere. Litterally.

It's a small village in the middle of the Swedish woods. Not much to do there i guess, so she suggests i bring a movie to watch. And im like, "ok, what kinda movies do you usually like". She answers "i like alot of different movies of different types". So i ask "is there anything you really hate to watch", she answers "nothing i can think of right now".

I figured i may as well hire three movies since that makes my chance of finding a suitable which she has not watched better. Problem is, what three movies do i pick?
Brainstorm please, and maybe give me a very short two liner what the movie you are suggesting is about.

Thanks!

A deserted house in the middle of nowhere, eh? She either wants to bone you, or kill you.

So it doesn't really matter which movies you bring.

In addition to the movies, bring porn. Leave it in the car where you can go get it if the occasion arises.

Sideways- and 2 bottles of wine, you wont need the other two movies....

good post...

- royal tennenbaums. kinda quirky and funny. if the girl is straightforward/boing this could be a bomb, but if she's cool it will be a hit.

- good will hunting. matt damon as math wiz. excellent movie, good romantic subplot. could bomb if she viciously hates math. movie is less dorky than i'm making it sound.

- best in show. also kinda weird, but funny. no romantic element at all. may bomb if she doesn't have good sense of humor, but then it was destined to fail anyway.

this isn't make-or-break here, but just as a philosophy i think you're probably making bigger mistakes if there's this much flapping over a movie. she made the suggestion, don't ask her to do all the work too and appear worried about it.

i think the sideways/wine (keep the wine clearly optional) suggestion is a good one.

The Sideways and wine idea is awesome. I like the Royal Tennenbaums suggestion too except that some people really don't like it...

What about Garden State? I imagine that has a good chance to go over well... plus it has Natelie Portman.

when you go out of your way to say that you mean something "literally" and you can not possibly mean it literally, some people can't resist pointing it out.

for future reference if she literally lives in the middle of nowhere then nowhere is an actual place and she lives in the middle of it.

Bring your cell phone so you can call her in the store to be sure you're not bringing over something she already saw.

Some suggestions:

My Life as a Dog(subtitles, but I don't know if you can read them cuz of the Swedish thing -- maybe not subtitled where you are?) Very very funny and touching, and really unusual. A kid growing up, tough childhood but really funny and lovingly observed

Spirited Away - Japanese cartoon, can watch with or without subtitles. A little girl gets separated from her parents in a strange abandoned amusement park, and when she finds them again they have been enchanted and turned into pigs. Incredibly inventive, very different and cool, thoughtful, evocative, and fun. You definitely don't have to like anime to like this one, and it isn't over the top goofy like so much anime is. This one is a slam dunk with virtually everybody, but chicks especially like the female protagonist and the wistful imaginativeness of it.

Beauty and the Beast - the original black and white by Cocteau. Subtitles(french movie) but very romantic and incredibly cool and entertaining. This one holds up extremely well even today. I've never seen a woman who was not enchanted by it. Plenty of fun for guys too. The Beast in this one is a lot more scary, though not terrifying or anything in a horror movie way.

Lost in Translation -- very moving, romantic, wistful, etc. Low energy, but high value stuff happening.

Bride of Frankenstein -- very funny oldy.

Most of the other stuff I'd recommend is either dude stuff or subtitled foreign stuff, so wouldn't know what to recommend without knowing the girl.

Oh, The Hidden was just reviewed here recently. Pick that up if you see it. Really great fun, sci-fi/horror. Good action and pacing to mix in with a slower movie or movies.

nice one!

i think you guys are assuming way too much with the suggestions, though. tenenbaums, spirited away, lost in translation, etc? great movies, but well off the beaten path. if he has literally no idea about her tastes i think those are pretty bad suggestions.

movies are bad enough for first dates because of the lack of interactivity. watching at home helps, but you want it to be something that's pretty easily-received. subtitles, cartoons, and art house kind of movies are going to be challenges to your average person. i think a straightforward condensed movie like sideways with some plot, some love, plenty of laughs, and a good excuse to drink is a great way to interact. the goal should be to have fun, not to impress her with your taste or pull out some "film that should be experienced".

this is correct.

Something easy, maybe a comedy or something you can sit back and laugh through together or something.

Christ, you're trying to hook up with this girl, not have an indepth discussion of cinematography or something.

Heheh welcome. I was pretty sure it was Swedish but didn't want to make a 100% claim on that. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

It really is a great movie, too. If you don't see it with her now, see it later. This is another one I've never seen a woman not blown away by. And it's just as good for guys.

Hejsan.

My suggestions would be to grab three movies, but don't go the "artsy" route that Blarg suggested. If Blarg was taking me on a date these would be great picks, but honestly the average movie going girl won't dig that kinda stuff.

For the first film bring a romantic comedy. When Harry Met Sally is a pretty great choice, but there is a good chance she's seen it already. Maybe Sleepless in Seattle, or Love Actually.

For the second movie I'd suggest a comedy. If you get the idea that she likes some of the more sophmoric humor out there American Pie or Super Troopers work well, especially if you guys are going to be drunk or stoned or whatever.

Finally, a good thriller often works as a good date movie. How about Silence of the Lambs or Mystic River? If you feel she likes more classic movies something like Rear Window or The Maltese Falcon would work well here as well.

Lycka till!

Though Groundhog Day and TCM were very good ideas...these woudl be my 3. What kind of girl has no kind of movie she dislikes? I'm already assuming that she is basically saying "I don't care...let's rail"

10-31-2005, 08:09 PM
This is an opportunity for psychological manipulation. Your weapons are: (1) scary movie to make her dependent and clingy; (2) comedy, to make her in the mood for some lighthearted fun; (3) erotic movie to make her horny; (4) romantic movie to make her affectionate.

Choose one good film from each category, and let her decide. Use her choice as an unconscious reflection of her mood at the time, and modify your skillz accordingly.
