On TV right now. This movie simply does not hold up as a horror flick. Agree?

On its own, no. It's scary in the context of Psycho and Marnie as Hitchcock's study of mothers.

Yeah, I see the blonde woman was abandoned by her mother. How does that tie into the bird attacks? Maybe I'm missing something.

It's exceptionally slow paced and not one of my favorites, but it does have some great moments. And Suzanne Pleshette was surprisingly hot and sexy back then.

Edit: Ok, I'll add a little.
The Birds, and 90% of Hitch's work, is misrepresented. People think he made "horror movies", he made psychological thrillers. A horror movie is about scaring people, a psychological thriller is about people.

Placed in context of Hitch's delight in the abuse of blondes, it's kind of cool.

If you note, the mother is the only character in the house to escape harm. Also, you'll note that the birds become an increasing problem as the girl comes between the mother and her son. This theme is also reflected in Psycho and Marnie, albeit with different sources of harm.

Nyet. Hitchcock made black comedies with elements of suspense, psychology and horror.
