New Laptop

I'm going to purchase a new laptop. The purpose behind it is so that I can play poker, but since I'm getting one I'd also like it to be able to run things such as Matlab, possibly Mathematica, and other nerdy programs so I can use it for schoolwork also. It seems like most people recommend getting a Dell. If so, what sort of things do I want to make sure it has and does anyone have an idea if there is going to be a good sale any time soon (end or quarter or whatever).
