View Full Version : Nevada Jacks Canadian customs question

10-30-2005, 01:04 AM
Have any Canadians been charged the customs duties warned about on PSO when they are shipped the Nevad Jacks chipset?
I'm guessing this is a hit or miss thing on whether they happen to check your package or not but I don't know.

I remember(Im assuming you got from PSO) reading a while ago he was shipping ipods and marking them as something other than value to customs for $ purposes. I dont know if that is still the case.

Usually if the item is used and not new, then you don't pay duties.

So just make sure they play a few hands with them, and mark them as used. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

If they ship UPS bend over and get ready.

You will not only get charged duty but also a ridiculously large fee from UPS for handling it through customs. I have no problem paying duty, but the extra fee put on by UPS is terrible.

I am surprised that PSO would commit fraud and misrepresent what is in a package.

From what I have read, yes you will be charged, and yes, they use UPS. As the chips are shipped directly from Nevada Jacks, they will not mark them under value or as used.

What you can do, depending on where you live, is handle the brokerage fees yourself (since this is where UPS gouges us). But I think you have to be located at a port of entry. For instance, I will be getting the same chips, and will handle the fees myself)

Hope this helps.

P.S. The usual charge I have seen is $65-80. But if you handle the brokerage yourself, it is apparently just around $25-30 in taxes. Not bad for a set of chips reatailing for around $400CDN. Plus, there are the persistent rumours that PSO will be getting a Canadian distributer - free shipping!

The 'duty' is actually the 7% GST.
Used or new makes no difference - value does.
If you could get them mailed Canada Post brokerage fee is $5.(plus the GST)
Couriers charge a bunch because of the extra handling involved in clearing customs and collecting the tax FOR CCRA.

PSO only ships UPS.

But ya, poker chips are duty free (as in no additional tax beyond GST) regardless of where they're made, so you're only subject to the 7% GST.

Scroll down to the post by dad604 for details on clearing customs yourself. He's even got the tariff # for the chips and cards.
