This isin't a contest, I am just curious to see the what kind of intelligence winning poker players have, please post a score and the level you play if you read this.

Any standardized test is fine.

ACT=29 (Math=32)

PS I am aware tests do not exactly equal intelligence but its the best option I can think of

I think you are gonna get skewed responces. People won't lie about their performances, but if they feel their scores ar not suitably above average they might not respond. So those that did quite well are more likely to respond.

But I will answer. I got (I think) 1280 on the GRE (took it 5 years ago), and I play small stakes.

Ooh, a no content brag thread. Fun.

1590 SATs.
800 on the math section of the GREs. 800 on the logic section of the GREs. (Less than 800 on the verbal section, but that was just because I didn't know some of the vocab words since I hadn't studied for the test at all).

The admissions test for my high school (Stuyvestant in NYC) is taken by more than 20k people each year. The year I took it I got the 13th highest score (actually tied for 13th with one other guy).

1520 SAT, 780 math 740 verbal.
34 ACT, I don't remember my 4 individual scores.
-I'm pretty sure once you go to college these things mean nothing and are not true reflections of intelligence, for the record. Intelligence is an abstract, subjective concept that can't be measured versus any standard. While I believe it possible to compare intelligence between individuals, you can't do it using any specific scale.

I play 10/20 6max as a base game, but have begun steadily playing more full recently, from 15/30-30/60 depending on how good any specific game is.

I only scored 1390 on my SATs but in my defense I didn't care at all about school back then, spent exactly 0 hours studying for the test and took it after 4 hours of sleep.

I maxed out every section of the ASVAB, including the speed math section, where you have like 1 minute to answer as many simple math questions as you can. It was designed to have more questions than you can answer in 1 minute, but I finished the last one at like 56 seconds. I scored a 161 on the AFAST (a test that the Army uses for flight school selection) after about 1 hour of study and my only aviation experience being about 3 months as a Black Hawk crew chief. To put that in perspective, people have been selected for flight school by scoring as low as 90, my first flight instructor who is very intelligent and who's been flying for 15 years scored in the 140s. There's a guy here who got his degree in aerodynamics and likes to brag about his score of 151.

I've never taken any IQ tests for scores but I did well enough on a Mensa exam to get in. Although I'm sure many people here will say that's nothing spectacular, and they would be right.

[/ QUOTE ]

No, what I think is that I could have scored much higher if I put some effort into it. If I had taken 2 years of SAT prep classes like some people I know, I don't think I would have had a problem scoring 1600. I realize I could have just posted 1390 and left it at that, and most people (maybe even most 2+2ers) would assume I'm pretty intelligent, but a 1390 SAT score is not representative of my answer to the question posed in this thread. In fact I would probably take an even money bet, or possibly lay 2:1 odds that I could score higher on a standardized IQ test than a random 1600 scorer. My AFAST score is a better reflection of that, but it wouldn't surprise me if I was the only one who will read this thread who's taken that test, maybe even the only one who's ever heard of it, so I felt it would be necessary to include a score from a more recognizable test. I don't know if you want to call that bragging, I suppose it is. Typically I don't talk to anyone about what I score on any tests, but the question was asked so I did my best to answer it accurately.

10-29-2005, 05:34 PM
Standardized tests are a waste of time, I never took any of them.

10-29-2005, 05:39 PM
Scoring 1600 takes a lot more luck than intelligence, you should know that. It's fairly straightforward to ace the math (though I didn't manage it) but the verbal always had two or three ambiguous questions.

[/ QUOTE ]
I find this of some interest as well, but unfotunately none of the responses in this thread can help formulate an answer to your question.

In order to see if there was some correlation between intelligence and being a winning player, you would need to know people's win rate (as a start), not just the limit they play at.

At best, the responses in this thread could allow you to make a statement correlating a person't intelligence to the level they play at.

Even then your results could easily be inaccurate because you would need to know how long people have been playing (that is, whether they just started, are in the process of moving up, or consistently play at a certain level).

For example, let's say John Stuart Mill (who's IQ was believed to be off the charts) and a bunch of other comparable minds all started playing $0.02-$0.04 limit HE. Could you conclude that being a genius and playing the lowest limits available were correlated?

Another way to look at this is to take a poker player X, and follow their poker career. Let's say they have an IQ of 130, and they're an adult, so their IQ remains relatively constant throughout their poker career (this is a reasonable assumption). They start playing a certain limit, let's say $0.50-$1. Two years later they have successfully moved up to $5-$10. How could you make any statements that would accurately related their IQ and limit? If you believed that more intelligent people played higher limits, you would have to conclude that a player became more intelligent as they moved up (or that they moved up as they became more intelligent - so maybe you should ask everyone for their POKER intelligence).

And of course GregJ already made a really good point; basically that your survey has some selection bias.

Sorry for the rant - I really thought this could be interesting, and it still is to some extent. Although I didn't count, I think most people responded with SAT or ACT scores. If not, then GRE, or similar, scores were the most common (in any event, those were certainly the top two). I think that says a lot about the demographic we're looking at here (poker players are young - what a revelation).

In any event, I'll play. I have found this thread interesting.

I scored 145+ on two widely accepted IQ tests (which was the top delineation reported).

I am currently playing 1/2 and might be transitioning to 1/2 6 max in preparation for a higher limit.

I've never understood mensa. If you're so smart go do something with your life. Cure cancer, get rich, become President - whatever floats your boat. Then I will look at you and say "There's a smart guy." Joining a club to feel superior and pat each other on the back is a waste of time.I pwn standardized tests like SATs and IQ tests. I'm sure I would be welcome at mensa, but I'm a dumbass. I've never accomplished anything worthwhile so just how impressive could a membership in mensa be?

I totally agree with this. A person who joins MENSA is like someone who buys a Porsche to compensate for his small you know what.

I don't think that this is entirely true. I think the point of joining these organizations is to give you the chance to share your thoughts or discuss something with other intellectual people. The average person is really stupid and you can't discuss certain "intelligent" things with them. And even those that are "smart" will often not want to discuss certain things with you becuase they are simply not interested. What do you all think?

I passed the MENSA test when I was put into gifted and talented schools when I was younger. I didn't join to compare mental penis size with anyone. In fact, I'm an athletic, beer drinking, frat boy...hardly someone who would really "fit" in at a MENSA meeting.

Yes I probably generalized about MENSA. But I believe many people are there becasue they do not feel successful enough. I do not know the exact details (I might be wrong on this one), but you can join MENSA if you score in the top 2% on at least one of several test. Now use binomial distribution to figure out not everybody is top 2% if they have several attempts with a 2% success rate.

Most people believe they are smarter than they actually are. For example look at this thread and the +130 IQ crowd (and not to mention +150 - I think the average IQ of profs at Oxford is 130). And many people in this thread guess or use internet and unsupervised tests to report their IQ, even tho only results of timed and supervised IQ tests are reliable.

I find it very difficult to believe that the average IQ or professors at Oxford is 130, but that seems awfully hard to prove.

The only IQ tests that I really believe are the in depth ones I had done as a kid when they were trying to figure out what was "wrong" with me. Most of the other "geniuses" I know went through similar child hoods and schoolings as I.

In high school in 1985 I had a 1290 on the SAT. But I recently bought a SAT test book to prove a point to my friend and took 5 sample tests and scored 1550,1550,1580, 1600, and 1600, in that order. The test is a joke now.

standardized tests are very stupid IMO, but better than other criteria used for college admission

[/ QUOTE ]

Not only are standardized tests stupid, but you should research how they measure your "IQ", and what that really is.

I scored just under 1400 on the SATs, but in my defense, I didn't really GO to high school; I maintain that had I not skipped the majority of classes, 1500-1600 would have been attainable. I mean, there's not really anything on that test with great difficulty as you all know. It's more time management and at least being familiar with certain concepts.

I play 8+ tables of 5/10 (6 max).

My grandfather was a genius, graduated Columbia with his Master's when he was 18, taught at Columbia as Professor of Spanish. He spoke several languages. My father went to Princeton University and is a dentist. I went to Harvard University...to hang out near the campus and watch people play chess...I still plan on sneaking into Oxford some day.

Any standardized test is fine.

PS I am aware tests do not exactly equal intelligence but its the best option I can think of

SAT 1030, took it once, didn't study, good enough for the public university I attended.

very true. if you actually went to college and didn't gain the ability to destroy the SAT, you might be mildy retarded. however, if you didn't go to college, i think your score might actually get lower after a few years.

I got a 32 on my ACT and never took the SAT. When I was tested in junior high and high school, I had a 149 IQ average of the three times I had it done. It's dropped down to around 130 since I started losing my mind.
