It seems like that's just a big waste of time when a catcher throws their mask off.. does it really impair their vision?

I think it not only impairs their vision, but that they can't put their head all the way back as well.

Time is not usually a key issue when a catcher is making a defensive play.

Depends on what type of play you are talking about and what type of mask you are talking about. If there is play at the plate catchers should always leave their mask, ex. That Molina play in the Cards Stros series when he left his on otherwise he would have gotten a knee straight to the dome.

Guys like Ausmus wear the hockey style masks usually leave it on because the vison is pretty clear. But the old mask style they take it off on like pop ups and bunts etc.
