Looking for mapping software

Not sure where to post this, so I figure here is as good as any:

Does anybody know of any good mapping programs out there? Specifically, something with global coverage (or, at the very least, North American coverage), with the ability to plot locations, calculate distances, create radii maps, region shading, etc.?
