i don't always raise this hand utg but the as per HOH i mixed it up and raised this time.

i am thinking that my flop bet was too big. i was trying bet out people with high cards or a flush draw, but what i ended up doing was building a big pot with me out of position. i knew when the other MP2 cold called my pot sized flop bet i was probably in trouble (i wasn't really concerned with the short stack).

no real read on MP2; he had just moved to my table a few hands prior.

any ideas on how to play these type of hands better would be much appreciated, because they are killing me.

I mostly like to limp with this hand, I'd only mix it up if I was sure the other players knew my play well, and in most tourneys you won't find that to be the case.

That said, if I did bet preflop, postflop looks good to me. There is a flush draw out there, and your preflop raise is only going to have few hands (AA-TT, A5s) ahead here. After the big bet and call, I'd be a little concerned about MP2. He might be unprofitable chasing a flush, but he might have you beat there. He is also pot committed now, and any action is going to get all his chips in at that point.

I don't mind the flop bet, but I'd be concerned about what to do on the turn without a good read on him. I'd probably end up at the same spot you ended up, but might get away from it on the turn since he has to showdown his hand vs. the other guy.

I think you played it okay. I would probably only raise to 450 preflop, and bet about 1000 on the flop. But I don't see how you get away from this hand unless you know your opponent is a solid player. A solid player probably wouldn't call preflop and the flop without having you beat (possibility of like 88, but that's about it), but a fish could have a lot of hands here. Don't beat yourself up over this one.

Ok thanks.

I had just read something about controlling the size of the pot and thought this might have been a good spot to do that.
