Moving to Vegas

Ok we have a first timer here so be easy on me. So I've been playing poke online for a living for about 9 months. I've made over $100,000 and i've decided to make the jump to vegas. The main reasons are to play in live satellites for the wpt events ect... And also because of taxes... I'll play just as much online just want the live action... I've been to vegas 3 times (once for 2005 wsop event 2 and once for the 2005 main event).. So i know the city a little... Ok finally to the questions... If anyone could just give me feedback on what they think of the idea and if there is anyone that has made the jump already... Simple things like where to live.. Where to play... Weather.. Meeting people.. Anything really... Thanks

This makes much more sense to me. There is a much better selection of mid to high limit games in LA. I don't know if it is more expensive to live there though????

the only action above 20 other than a rare mirage 40 game and rare wynn 40 games is bellagio. Commerce alone has more selection.

I thought Mirage 40 was a pretty regular game, no? I'll be in Vegas for 10 days in December and figure I'll spend most of my time at Bellagio playing 30-60 or some 80-160 possibly as well. I like Mirage and Wynn also, but would prefer 40-80 at those places.

Yes it is a LOT more expensive. Apts and houses of equal quality will probably cost almost twice as much in LA. Not to mention food, gas, etc.

At least we have beaches though. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

1. Live -- I've been in Vegas for a year and a half and live in the southern part of the city. Right up against the Henderson border but near the Strip. I love this location and have found that there are a number of pros who live in this area. The plusses are the traffic isn't as brutal as in other parts of town and all the casinos are no more than 20 minutes away anytime of day (maybe a bit longer during rush hour). Rent until you are sure you want to stay. The median house is $300K Rent in my area is roughly $700 for a 1BR.

2. Play -- if you are using your 100 large as bankroll you are pretty much limited to Bellagio, Wynn (sometimes) or Mirage. Realistically, if you really want to take the plunge on the cash side you'll want to play at Bellagio. However, if you are just looking for action and want to play in nice rooms with a friendly atmosphere you should try out other rooms. If you really have game, you may be able to make a couple thou a session playing the low-end NL games at places like Mandalay Bay or the Palms vs. grinding with a big bankroll to get the same at Bellagio playing 80/160.

3. Weather - it's great! July sucks but that's about it.

4. Meeting people - most people in Vegas are from somewhere else and it is easy to strike up a conversation with nearly anyone. Clubs are everywhere and opportunities to meet people abound. However, being Vegas be wary of the intentions of some. When I first moved here and told people I just moved here they were a lot more eager to be my friend. Some had good intentions but others do not.

This is a KEY point when you become a regular in a casino locale. That's one thing I'd be worried about moving to Vegas...that I'd have lots of people to BS with when I play at Bellagio but few actual friends b/c I'd be afraid to tell anyone anything true about myself (that I play with). You do have to look out for yourself in that type of environment (where people might be broke, desperate or become that way eventually...it is very tough to say no to someone you have become close with). Maybe I'm just too paranoid. I think regular posters on here would be an exception to this however.

Sklansky himself has said from purely a poker standpoint LA is the best place to live.

Although Vegas is clearly the overall gambling capitol, I think it would be difficult to dispute that L.A. is the poker capitol of the U.S.

No Jeff, you are not paranoid. You are smart. I know many players in the city and am recognized by regulars in a number of casinos. With the exception of a few, they know little about me beyond how I play cards and whatever other small talk I want to exchange. I like it that way and strongly recommend that to people who are just moving out here.

LA does have the best action and the beach but beyond that it's a bitch to get around and a much higher cost of living. That's not to say everyone should move to Vegas but keep all factors in mind before making the move. Not just poker. It's easy enough to hop on a flight between the two cities if you want to tournament hop or play in different rooms.
