Yup, one of my favorites. The Idiot is also very good.

This is pretty much the best post ever.

Yeah, I liked it.

But I have to say, I couldn't be sure if the long, dullish stretches helps it seem so good, cos when you get to the good passages, they are so much better than the rest you can't help but appreciate the quality.

Does that make sense?

On these forums I would've thought that The Gambler would be considered as his best work

Oh, I get it. We're gamblers, so our favorite books are about gambling.

I know everyone thinks the scenes with the children are great but I thought they were overwrought and too sentimental. Still a great book but my favorite of his is The Posessed (The Demons).

i remember reading somewhere that dostoevsky had a crippling gambling addiction and that he had to write one of his major novels (the possessed, maybe) in a really brief amount of time to pay off his gambling debt.

The Brothers Karamazov is the best novel I've ever read, and Notes From Underground was the reason I read it.

This is in the foreword to Brothers. I believe it was the Gambler that he wrote in three weeks.

One of those on my list that I never seem to get any closer to.

I've read Notes from Underground, The Gambler, and Crime and Punishment. Liked them all, a lot, too. Just haven't gotten around to any more.
