View Full Version : Mailman took change off my front porch

I work from home. Today, I was sitting on the couch(5 feet from the front door). While I was sitting there, the mailman came to deliver the mail. My mailbox is right next to the front door, hanging on the exterior wall, so I could clearly see what he was doing.

He put the mail in the mailbox, then bent over and picked up about $.75 in change that was lying on the porch. It was there because I was sitting in a chair on the front porch last night and the change had fallen out of my pocket.

Is this stealing? The front porch is definitely on my property, so it's not the same as picking up change on the sidewalk. However, it's not as bad as if he were to take the change from my couch cushion or something. If it is not stealing, what is to stop him from taking the chairs and table that are also on the porch?

What do you think I should do about it(if anything)?

You still didn't answer the question. Do you consider it stealing? If so, why not?

Well, he's not the regular mailman. I doubt he'll deliver my mail tomorrow.

I vote stealing. Sure, it's not a huge amount, but it's still stealing.

Taking money you find on the sidewalk is one thing, because it's easy to surmise that you'll never find the person who lost it, and it could very well be public property.

But on your front porch? Doesn't it seem like the homeowner might be the one who left the money there? It's not much different than being inside someone's house and spotting a quarter on the floor - you'd never pick it up and take it, right?

Stealing, but not worth caring about. I do like the glue idea though.

I think $1.00 would work much better than 75 cents. OTOH, toilet paper is better and cheaper than either.

Stealing. The money isn't worth worrying about, but the mailman is a moran.

About 2 years ago my landlord came by to clean the laundry room in the basement and stole the loonie (cdn $1 coin) I had left on the shelf with my laundry detergent (there were no other tenants at the time). wtf?!

His neighbor left $.75 on his porch too.

P.S.-If .75 cents means so much to you that you post it on here and you knew that you had dropped .75 cents on your porch the night before, why not pick it up.

Of course it's stealing. Like you said, if picking up the change is not stealing then taking your patio furniture is not stealing either, and I don't think anybody would argue that the latter is not theft. If I had noticed and was in a playful/caring mood, I would put out a larger amount of change tomorrow - maybe double - and see if he takes it and keep doubling it until he stops.

Yes, it is stealing, but - do you want to report him to the post office and have the chance of him and his friends at the post office funking up your mail?

Everyone knows the post office is one of the worst jobs in the universe and only room temperature IQ people would want to work there, so take that into account when worrying over your .75 cents. Would you be mad at a monkey if it took a banana off your porch that you accidently left there - this is EXACTLY the same situation.

I'm just surprised the guy wasn't more artful. He could have "accidentally" dropped some mail on your porch, and scooped the coinage up while picking the mail up.

Coat some change in a slow-acting but deadly poison with chronic effects, leave the deadly dimes lying about on your porch, then blackmail the mailman into re-routing all expensive-looking packages to an anonymous drop point in an out-of-town storage facility in exchange for regular doses of the antidote.
