The "I check" tell in live NL/PL, particularly tournaments

I noticed that when someone says "I check" or otherwise makes a strong gesture or statement to indicate they are checking, they are often playing for a checkraise.

I don't think this tell is particularly reliable, as many players will make a strong check to discourage your bet.

I think I may have done this in the past. Now that I'm aware of it, I'll make sure my checks are consistent regardless of situation.

A strong check means weakness. They want you to think they are going to check raise. Think about it.

I think that a super quick check is a tell of strength.

If they say "I check" kinda slowly and with some hesitation, I think that can indicate a checkraise, but it really depends on whether he is a good player and expects you to bet for good reason or is a bad player and always checkraises his strong hands, and you read him for a strong hand. A lot of other things are of course equally important to whether or not you think you are going to be checkraised.

In general, I think the "I check" statement, said in a typical way usually means "please don't bet"
