No, only legal methods, I just don't want a bunch of crap put on my computer when I download the music.

If you don't care much about "legal", http://www.slsknet.org/ is the absolute best (no spyware/no adware/enormous selection)

Most of the legal places suck ass, terrible selection, idiotic methods of protection, many need subscription etc.

Okay, I must be retarded. Why do all my downloads say "Awaiting User" or "Remotely Queued"?

emusic.com they give you some free songs (i think 50), you can even quit after that and owe nothing.

If the user you're trying to get the music off is busy, it says "remotely queued" and if they aren't online, its "awaiting user". Best way to get music is bittorent, its kinda hard to get working at first but once you got the hang of it, its the best. The beauty is, you get whole albums instead of songs, and you are downloading off more than one person in case something goes wrong. Have a look at www.torrentspy.com (http://www.torrentspy.com)

Yeah I use Bit Torrent, but there's always some stuff that I can't find. Soulseek has stuff that BitTorrent doesn't, and vice-versa.

that's because it's not legal

www.listen.com (http://www.listen.com) has unlimited streaming for about $8/month and you can download tracks for offline/portable play

in a similar sense as to why online poker may be illegal.

russians run the site, and according to them, taking somebody elses IP and selling it is ok. according to the US gov't, it is not.

So they're just stealing the MP3's and the artists/RIAA get nothing? And I'd be paying for this?

It's very easy to download entire albums on Soulseek as well. In fact, Soulseek is way easier than bittorrent for finding entire albums -- it just might take awhile to download if the person has a long queue.

I was doing some research into this. According to this website, (http://www.museekster.com/allofmp3faq.htm#Is%20Allofmp3%20legal?) the artists apparently do get a cut, but the RIAA does indeed get nothing. It also looks like the legality is fairly clear. You can still debate whether it's ethical or not, though.

That's why I use it. Plus, there is an endless selection of foreign music you can't find on mainstream sites.

allofmp3 is definitely the correct answer if your time has any value and you don't have any contacts. the legality as mentioned in the link is basically buyer beware but considering the host country is russia, it's a get it while it's hot unbeatable deal. any further comments down this line is a politics forum issue but basically it boils down to a really powerful but still reforming country giving it the temporary ok.

for hot, top 40 releases though, irc is an easy and free alternative. just realize that you are going to spend more time on it than if you'd just pay the russians a buck or two.

Because there are thousands of people trying to download from hundreds of sources.
