Because I have absolutely nothing better to do with my time, I spent a half-hour this afternoon on google maps (http://maps.google.com) looking at pretty satellite pictures. Then I thought, "hrm, maybe a contest would be fun." Anyway, let's see how good you all are at recognizing locations from above.

I've chosen what I think is probably going to be a very difficult one as my first challenge. For some people, this will be close to impossible, but there are a large number of posters on here for whom it will be a possibly difficult, but doable, task. I won't go any further into detail yet about why this is, but that's your only hint.

So anyway, what is this?

Winner gets nothing.

Stupid answers, which are defined as anything on a list of possible stupid answers I have written in a .txt file on my desktop, will result in eternal damnation. Enjoy!

I disagree. I can't explain why yet, though, without giving out a hint I don't want to give.

I25, I70 interchange Denver.

10-21-2005, 12:27 AM
I don't think it is, but it reminds me of an interchange in Dallas that I go through about once a year. Every time I'm there they've changed something or moved a sign or I don't see a sign I'm looking for until it's too late and I wind up in the gawdawfullest parts of that place! Damn you Dallas!!

Does anyone pretend their driving and take trips on google maps? You can drive down streets you know (around where you live) and just scroll through and it seems like overhead driving. It's so fun.

That was my first guess, but there should be an exit immediately after the intersection on Eastbound I-70, and I don't see it.

I'm thinking that I'm gonna put a pretty short time limit on this round.

I'm currently 180 hands into my poker session for the night. I'm 6-tabling the 15/30, which gets me about 500 hands/hr. When I hit 1k hands, I'm going to decide whether or not I want to stop, or go for 1500. Either way, when I'm finished playing, if no correct answers are in, I'll post results.

Or would people rather it go on until a correct answer?

its the interchage of the 110 and 105 in Los Angeles.

The I-105/I-110 interchange in Los Angeles links the Glenn Anderson (Century) Freeway-Transitway with the heavily traveled Harbor freeway. This is the first intermodal interchange in California with vertical transferability accommodating cars, vanpools/carpool/buses/light rail. It has three levels of transfer facilities, including direct HOV connectors between the two freeways. The design of this interchange addressed congestion, safety, and air quality. Numerous designers and contractors worked on this complex project and saw it completed in 1993.

Well, your images aren't loading for me right now, which I suspect is related to all the other internet issues, but regardless, you win. It is the 110/105 interchange in LA.

There are a number of features visible in the satellite shot that are distinctive to me, even if you don't just recognize it by the general shape:

- Left-lane carpool offramp on the 110S. Going from the 110s to the 105W (toward LAX) in the carpool lane is like driving on a real-life Rainbow Road (MarioKart64 version). Especially stoned out of your gourd.....or so I hear.

- Train tracks for local rail are visible between the 2 sides of the 105.

- You can make out some of the bus-stop area under the main crossing.

- Going south on the 110, the road curves to the right shortly after the interchange.

I know poker is a taboo subject in here, but for those interested, Hollywood Park is just off the left edge of the screen. Normandie and Hustler are just off the bottom edge.

its because im from orange county and that is the biggest interchage in southern california. so i figured it had to be it.

Hollywood Park is northwest of the 105/110 interchange and by a decent margin. It's much closer to the 105/405 interchange than the 105/110 interchange.

I got it in two seconds mostly because I've had to take that 270 degree loop going from northbound on the 110 to west on the 105 a gazillion times when going from the Hustler to Hollywood Park.

I've never seen a higher interchange, especially viewed from the 110. When you are on top that carpool ramp going from the eastbound 105 to the northbound 110 it can be sort of scary.

Looks to me like Area 51 or some other air base. But i'm doubting they'd let people take pictures like that. Or it could be LV airport. I dunno, those are my two stab in the dark guesses.

Thansk for introducing me to google maps, its made my day. especially as it covers the UK too.

I knew this was the 105 and something. I looked at the 105/605 and the 105/710 inter changes, and they did not look right. I should have gotten this.
