View Full Version : worth of a poker domain name

i am trying to gauge what to pay for a good internet poker domain name. I know obviously poker.com would be the most valuable, but i am looking to maybe get another more affordable one to use for a poker related business.

Some options i am considering:

PokerCity.com
PokerIsland.com
Pokerriver.com

Pokerplace.com, among others

I have contacted some URL owners who are considering selling the names.

I had offered over $2500 for one of these, and $1500 for another, but it doesnt sound like the owner was that interested.

Does anyone here know what I should offer, because i don't want it to be too much obviously, and i have no clue to be honest?

i'm gonna give ya a free tip here, because we don't need it.

last time i looked, the domain www.playcomputerpoker.com (http://www.playcomputerpoker.com) was available.

we had tried many many versions of onlinepoker.com, computerpoker.com etc. most went to sites in waiting, and MANY of them went to empire. empire grabbed a ton of good names, and they all lead to them. however, the above one was open.

you need a simple name, and one that is easy to remember

I am waiting for the .eu to come out.
I wonder if I'll be fast enough.
poker.eu sounds good huh? But I don't think I'll be able to grab it. eventhough I work for an internetprovider.

It's the european .com
It's like .be for Belgium or .co.uk for UK.
.eu is gonna be very popular when it comes out. You'll see.

there are bound to be dozens of names still available

go to the like of http://123cheapdomains.com/ and enter a few names in their "check domain availability" box - i just found www.DealEmUp.com (http://www.DealEmUp.com) and www.LetsPlayCards.com (http://www.LetsPlayCards.com) are available, for example

once you have a, preferably, memorable name the important thing is to buy your way onto the big search engines for when people search for "poker"

paying big bucks for a name isn't really that necessary any more, because of the incredible search engines about - people will either try typing www.poker.com (http://www.poker.com) or they will use something like google, if they are just surfing randomly - they will never think of the names www.pokerstars.com (http://www.pokerstars.com) or www.paradisepoker.com (http://www.paradisepoker.com), for example, by chance

they will never think of the names www.pokerstars.com (http://www.pokerstars.com) or www.paradisepoker.com (http://www.paradisepoker.com), for example, by chance

this is exactly right, and also the reason why Empire and others have purchased so many domains.

we were going for names that people may put into the search engine, and "play computer poker" is a good candidate IMO.

Are www.kookpoker.com (http://www.kookpoker.com) or www.riggedshuffle.com (http://www.riggedshuffle.com) available?

good logical thinking, gran, but, again, because of the sophistication of today's serach engines, unnecessary, imo

i use a search engine called WebFerret and i just tried putting only the word "poker" in the box

from that one word i see on the first page or two of results: paradise, thepokerclub, pacific, empire, party, royalvegas, dynamite, poker, planet, popular

and the list goes on and on

people are lazy and won't go further than putting one word in a box as long as they get results

whatever name you choose, i believe you have to get into the search engines' results, and high in those results

for example, in the list i am looking at there is one called epochcash - how the hell did that get in there? find their secret and you're made, whatever your name

Are www.kookpoker.com (http://www.kookpoker.com) or www.riggedshuffle.com (http://www.riggedshuffle.com) available?

hmm, not bad. would make for some interesting posts, huh??

Bubmack says:
<font color="red"> I had suited aces at riggedshufflepoker.com last night, and this guy with 2-7o calls 12 raises cold and then flop comes.... </font color>

btw, how about ripping off a big casino name. how about www.BellagioPoker.com (http://www.BellagioPoker.com) etc..

after they file their civil suit and send you a bunch of nasty letters, your lawyers will tell them to go blow cuz' you are located in Bangladesh. Then Bellagio comes along and gives you 50k for it just to keep their name clean.

OT trivia... www.dunkindonuts.com (http://www.dunkindonuts.com) was started by some people that wanted a site for people to go to to complain about mouse-heads in the bagels, and pigs-eyes in the donuts. i don't remember how much the real parent company paid for this site from these rouge owners, but it was substantial.

mike,

why would those 2 listed be so high?

it is not like they are great names or anything. i wonder where they get off asking so much for them?

any ideas?

apparently the days when you could rip off big names are over - if you bought a site name that was the same as some major obvious "copyrighted" name then that name has the right to take the name off you - i don't think they even have to pay you for it

try it - enter a major corporation name, or even a popstar's name, and the site will be owned by or relate positively to the subject

now if you misspell the major name that is a different matter - try www.yaho.com (http://www.yaho.com) for instance - they hope to catch the people who misenter yahoo

so perhaps paradisepoke.com could be good ...

the important thing is to buy your way onto the big search engines

Hey Mike, you don't have to buy you way in.
The difficult part are the METATAGS in your html code.
Try google.com and search for "Belgium poker" or "Hung poker" Or look for any word with Belgium or Belgian. We're listed on top of the page. Am I good or am I good /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif Took me two months. But I got the best seat now. /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif Didn't pay one cent for it.

wow, hung!

i tried "belgium poker", search type: all keywords, on my webferret and you came up second and fifth on their long list - pretty impressive!

(of course, jealously, i tried "mike haven", search type: exact phrase, and twoplustwo posts came up second and third! lol!)

absolutely no idea! - temporary insanity by the vendors? they aren't even catchy

here's one that i checked and is available - it strikes me as a pretty good name: www.ShuffleUpAndDeal.com (http://www.ShuffleUpAndDeal.com), especially if the site specialised in tournies

a year or two ago i would have bought it to try to resell, but i can't even get rid of a couple that are supposed to be the highly desirable five letter generic dot coms

but $120,000.00 for pokercast.com ??

and $75,000.00 for pokerex.com??

there must be an explanation as to why these 2 are so high. they are freakin NUTZ

click on this link (http://tinyurl.com/dic7) to read the whois

have a look at the name of the administrative contact!

i hope you received one big fat Finder's Fee from this particularly canny gentleman?

hmmmm...

maybe i can get that t-shirt now??? or do i still have to eliminate him? maybe the marketing budget can handle 2 shirts, but if not, i'll just take him out.

3X please, and make sure it is 100% cotton. i break out with hives from cheap rayon. also, cetified child-labor free would be nice, but i understand if this is not possible. if it is good enough for kathly lee the Diva, then it is good enough for Granny.

anyways, i'm leaning strongly towards pokerisland.com

Think i can get it cheaper than pokercity.com, and i like the theme i could build around it.

Now what should i offer? $1000....$3000......$8000?

Mike Haven
06-06-2003, 12:06 PM
www.pokerisland.biz (http://www.pokerisland.biz) is available for about $14pa, i believe

dot coms are obviously more valuable because of the memorability factor, but i would have thought that most people would get to your site via a link, so the dot com may not be so important for you

if you must have the dot com it is purely and simply a supply and demand matter - the vendor will be trying to get the most he can - you'll be doing the opposite - there is no finite price - it's a heads up poker game between the two of you - at some point he should realise you will buy the dot biz name, or whatever, and not his - that will be the price if the deal is to be done, and how high that is is up to you

good luck with it - let us know when you are up and running

We don't have 3X shirts

you don't cater to the morbidly obese?

how discriminatory.

please have the sweatshop you contract with sew 4XL shirts together. tell them to sew the extra armholes closed, and i will keep my back-up packs of lucky stikes in them.

when the shirt is ready, just mail it to the 2+2 offices. Mason will bring it to me.
