Hurricanes suck. My mom got all freaked out about this damn thing that may not even hit here and at who knows what strength if it does. How long before people forget Katrina and stop worrying before they have to?

So anyway she calls the wife, and offers to fly the wife and kids to Texas for a few days. I can't go because of work. So I'll probably be stuck sitting at home by myself all weekend, possibly with no electricity if it hits. It will also likely be flooded, downed trees, most public places closed, etc.

I'll probably follow [censored]'s lead and make a trip to the bookstore this afternoon. I'm looking for some good fiction. Not pop stuff and no sci-fi, more serious stuff. Recommendations welcome.

What would you do stuck at home, in the house for a weekend by yourself with no electricity?

edit: This has become a "suggestions for Jake" thread. I was really hoping for more discussion of what you would do personally.

After going through a 24 hour evacuation I would stay home too. Probably one of the worst events of my life.

Jake, if you like mysteries w/ some meaning, check out Dennis Lehane; start with A Drink Before The War.

Also, stock up on beer and porn mags.

I've been recommending this book a lot. I enjoyed it.

William Gibson is known for dark future sci-fi. But this book is more about society and global marketing.

Gibson: All Tomorrow's Parties.

It'll make you think. And you'll have a tough time putting it down once it gets going.

Thanks. I'll look for it. I'm not sure what I'm looking for. I used to read lots of mysteries, but was lookign for something more serious.

The beer will of course be bought. My favorite porn is on the laptop, and it's got an extra battery. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

This is an excellent suggestion, but as I said, they'll likely also be powerless and flooding may prevent it.

Where are you, and what's the probability of being hit by Wilma?

You gotta play hurt • Dan Jenkins
Good, funny book

The Eagle Has Landed • Jack Higgins
I assume you've either read this already or have seen the movie. If not, highly recommended.

Jake,

Have you read anything by W.E.B. Griffin? He writes war novels, usually pretty historically accurate, but still fiction. Some take place during WWII and some are more modern. I like it.

I read The Corps series. They were ok, but a little too soapish for my taste. Less romance and more killing would've been better. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

Miami, and the cone is pretty wide at this point. This was really intended to be more of a hypothetical thread about what people would do if it hit.

Dan Jenkins is great and it's been awhile since I read any of his...Semi Tough, Dead Solid Perfect and Life Its Own Self. Good suggestion.

I've read The Eagle Has Landed about a dozen times. I've read everything Higgins has ever written (including his pseudonyms) except the ones in the last couple of years or so. He's kinda lot his touch imo.

Jake screw books go get yourself a generator, if the hurricane does hit your town then FEMA will pay you back whatever you spend for it.

On a side note I have been in Beaumont for past two weeks and I would not have wanted to be there when Rita went through.

Jake if that thing hits you hard be prepared to have NOTHING open in your town for a long while. I waited a hour and half for sonic when I first got to Beaumont because nothing else was open.

How about something by V.S. Naipaul? It's cool to learn about different worlds sometimes. Get out of the house mentally speaking. He's a very good writer.

If want more killing I recommend Shaun Hutsons later books a lot of guns and violence. Any of his Doyle books, Exit Wounds or Warhol's prophecy.

Excellent english writer his horror stuff is loads better than Steven King and James Herbert.

I've only read the odd short story and some essays, but really liked what I read a lot. The guy is really sharp and straightforward. So since I haven't read any of his novels, I can't pick one specifically. But I did order this non-fiction work, Among the Believers: An Islamic Journey.

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0394711955/qid=1129823699/sr=8-5/ref=pd_bbs_5/103-5708906-8151868?v=glance&s=books&n=507846

It's about his trip through Iran and the Middle East after the Shah got booted from Iran. It aroused a storm of controversy, as of course anything about Islam invariably does. Let's just say that he doesn't give its manifestations in modern politics a good review.

For fiction, I think he is best known for A Bend in the River, and his more recent A House for Mr. Biswas got rave reviews when it came out. I hope to get to both of them eventually. But I could spend a long time just reading his essays and be happy with them, too.

Oh, skip the first customer review on Among the Believers at Amazon. The guy has an agenda to pound, and it's just irritating and stupid.

Look at the bright side... maybe we'll get a $2,000 debit card to spend on booze and strippers. Let me know when you get yours in the mail and we'll meet up at Stir Crazy.

Man it is just a 2,000 dollar wire transfer now right into your bank account, not to mention your 330 dollars from the Red Cross.

On second thought that plan kinda sucks because last time I went to a strip club with a friend I was too busy chatting for an hour with this chick in my lap to acknowledge his existence.

He had a crappy time. poor guy =(

Yea. the questions was what would you do if you're stuck at home alone with no electricity. If the streets flood and are blocked by trees, I reslly don't see people coming over to play cards.

Thanks, yea. I've read that. Anyway, it's done. At lunch I went berserk at the bookstore and bought a bunch of stuff I've always wanted to read or have been meaning to read. Mostly classic kinda stuff. And a couple of guilty-pleasure kind of reads.

I'd play a crapload of guitar and read all the half-read books and magazines that I have yet to finish. also I'd rub a bunch out, assuming I was alone. otherwise I'd hump my girlfriend/flavor of the month a lot.
