View Full Version : Based on my DVD collection... What am I missing?

10-20-2005, 05:34 AM
Hello everyone,

I am a big movie buff and am trying to build the ultimate DVD collection. Based on the current movies I have, what do I need to get to make my collection complete?

You can also include things I should get rid of. I am basicly looking for people who have the same tastes in movies as I do and what they recommend:

The Godfather Trilogy
Goodfellas
Casino
Pulp Fiction
Kill Bill Volume I & II
Star Wars Trilogy
Star Wars Episode I-III (when it comes out)
Swingers
Old School
Ocean's Eleven
The Great Escape
LOTR Trilogy
Snatch
Scarface
Super Troopers
Dazed and Confused
DodgeBall
The Rock
Any Given Sunday
Anchorman
Napoleon Dynamite
Miracle
Office Space
Terminator I-II
Braveheart
The Last Samurai
Animal House
Super Troopers
Rounders
Half Baked
Boondock Saints
Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
Fight Club

On The Buy List:
The Matrix Trilogy
Jurassic Park I-II
Memento
Requiem For A Dream
Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (thank you)
Eurotrip (thank you)
Donnie Darko (thank you)
Forrest Gump (thank you)
The Usual Suspects (thank you)
Caddyshack
The Blues Brothers
Blazing Saddles
Se7en
Alien
Aliens
American Pie Trilogy

Edit: I forgot about my TV Collection:

24 Season 1
The Simpsons Season 3-6
Family Guy Season 1-3
Curb Your Enthusiasm Season 1-4
Seinfeld

Thikning about buying Lost and more 24.

There are a couple of these that I got for very cheap from a friend and don't really need/want and am willing to sell. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

get some weird movies in there, you have all the ones that everyone has. i'm thinking movies like waking life, battle royale, whatever. also don't buy 24, i mean how many times can you possibly watch that? just download. also for mainstream moves, get usual suspects.

The Producers
Blazing Saddles

With 24, I would have agreed, but I just bought season 1 after not having watched it since its release on TV and it was almost as good as the first time through. I'm thinking every couple of years this will be a good watch. Also, Kim is so damn sexy.

I think the American Pie triology is amusing...

Hell, I just checked my own collection, and I could list 10-20 under V alone...., so I quit.

But before I do, there's also:

TV Shows:
Twin Peaks
The Prisoner

+ ones I've seen recently that deserve a place in any collection:

12 Monkeys
25th Hour

10-20-2005, 06:07 AM
I also want to mention that I need some movies that are good date movies or at least movies that girls and guys will like together. Top Gun is probably good for that. I'll add that to the list.

You seem to only be interested in movie made in the last 10 years, so that's gonna limit your choices on good films a lot. But if that's what you like:

City of God
Motorcycle Diaries
Yi Yi
25th Hour
Before Sunset
Hotel Rwanda
Fog of War
Werckmeister Harmonies
Sideways
Spirited Away
Amadeus Director's Cut
Triplets of Belleville
The Incredibles
Rushmore
Being John Malkovich
American Splendor
The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (not recent, but I've never shown anyone this movie who didn't end up loving it)

Actually, that is not true. This is why I consider my DVD collection incomplete. I think only The Great Escape and Godfather are the films I have before the 80's, but I would definetly like more, and am interested in good movies from before that I may not remember to have listed.

Blarg - you beauty! I thought I was the only person in the world who liked/saw the Hidden.

I love the stripper in this, she's perfect.

And a kick-ass car chase, huh?

Blarg
10-20-2005, 09:21 AM
That was one of the most fun films ever. And yeah, the stripper almost killed me. She still stands out as one of the most mind-blowingly sexy women I've ever seen in movies.

The action was outrageous, and the acting was even really good and interesting, often funny, sometimes touching. Kyle McLachlan's acting choices were just really interesting to watch throughout. I remember him saying that he was trying to play the role as if he were wearing a mask and trying to figure out how to animate it. His alient just wasnt familiar with humans and didn't really know how to do what he needed to do, to come off right. It was great; everything he did became interesting.

And yeah, that car chase sure started things off with a bang.

And I loved when the possessed guy goes, "I want that car," and you know what's coming has to be bad. REALLY bad. The whole scene of him taking it was hilarious.

The commentary is good too. Amazing that Michael Nouri never went anywhere; he was so good in this and in Fright Night. The director comments that he had everything he needed and was talented and on his way, but his obnoxious personality guaranteed that nobody in Hollywood would ever want to work with him again.

Prophecy was at 70s one with Talia Shire about a mutant bear I think - that isn't the one I meant. This one was pants. Not just pants, but grey, fraying, old man, contains-all-available-specimens-for-medical-testing pants.

The Prophecy (80s or 90s) has Christopher Walken as the archangel Gabriel. It's fan-bloody-tastic. I'll review it sometime soon.

Saving Private Ryan
True Romance

Boiler Room
Taxi Driver
The Silence of the Lambs
Reservoir Dogs
Miller's Crossing
American Psycho

I know one response mentioned Pacino movies so let me suggest a few specifics:

A Dog Day Afternoon
Serpico
Donnie Brasco
Carlito's Way.

Very few mentioned Eastwood movies. Pretty much his entire catalog is worth having, particularly:

The Outlaw Josey Wales
Unforgiven
Where Eagles Dare
The Dirty Harry movies - esp. the first two.

I didn't like it all that much at first either. It's only when I saw the first DVD of it that I realized that it wasn't just good, it was great. The subtleties of the character interactions are often hilarious -- the expressions they trade, and such, are very off kilter and not the ones you would expect in similar situations. The characters themselves are often just fun no matter what they do, particularly Fry, Dr. Zoidberg, and The Professor. There are constant little bits they do that are very funny completely outside of what's happening in the plot and flow of action. And the voice acting in the show is really great.

One of the things I like about it most of all is that it was what the Simpsons used to be -- Groenig's sly slant on things that the Simpsons eventually watered down into a likeable family phenomenon. Futurama's people never lost as much of the misfit as did the Simpsons, or as much of their anger. The Simpsons eventually became a world where even the bad guys join the good guys in being all in this thing together; Mr. Burns and Mr. Smithers lost both their bite and their contemptibility, and were rehabbed into the grand, happy human family. Futurama's people were jerks and losers, sometimes pretty confused about it, sometimes defiant or even happy about it. They still had some spunk, misdirected though it often was. Futurama wasn't afraid to have people who weren't always on the right side of everything, and their digs at the world were sharper and truer than the Simpsons were past their first half dozen years. As The Simpsons slipped more into being a kid's show, Futurama kept an adult twist. I think it's where Groenig's real heart lay after The Simpsons became more of a bland, mid-cult popular juggernaut that nobody would bother writing outraged letters to sponsors about anymore.

Futurama's people never lost as much of the misfit as did the Simpsons, or as much of their anger. The Simpsons eventually became a world where even the bad guys join the good guys in being all in this thing together; Mr. Burns lost both their bite and their contemptibility, and were rehabbed into the grand, happy human family. Futurama's people were jerks and losers, sometimes pretty confused about it, sometimes defiant or even happy about it. They still had some spunk, misdirected though it often was. Futurama wasn't afraid to have people who weren't always on the right side of everything, and their digs at the world were sharper and truer than the Simpsons were past their few half dozen years. As The Simpsons slipped more into being a kid's show, Futurama kept an adult twist. I think it's where Groenig's real heart lay after The Simpsons became more of a bland, mid-cult popular juggernaut that nobody would bother writing outraged letters to sponsors about anymore.

good collection, but you really need some classics.

Hitchcock, David Lean, John Ford, Billy Wilder, film noir, etc.

My first thought was that he needed more horror classics, but some people just don't like horror, and his lack of it suggested he might not either.

I hesitated to recommend The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, because some don't like westerns, but finally did because it's a great movie whether you like westerns or not.

It's hard to recommend movies for people who are not clear about what they really like.

Donnie Darko, no questions asked.

I have a question (hehe), would you recommend the director's cut or the theatrical? I would recommend the theatrical, I found the director's cut left a little less to the imagination and the pace wasn't quite as good.

You seem to have a prediliction toward snappy dialogue with some action and honour, I'll take that into account.

You make look at some of the list and think *ugh* black and white, but I assure you these are just amazingly entertaining films that anyone who loves movies will enjoy.

Kurosawa, mainly:
The Seven Samurai
Rashomon
Ikiru
(but I'm pretty sure after you see these you'll want all his flicks).

Wilder, mianly:
The Aparment
Double Indemnity
Sunset Blvd.

Hitchcock, there's a box set coming out this fall I believe, keep a look out.

Scorsese, hopefully you got Goodfellas as part of the box set with After Hours and Mean Streets, and get the MGM box set with Raging Bull. And anything else he directed you don't have.

Kubrick, mainly:
Dr. Strangelove
A Clockwork Orange

Coen Brother, again keep an eye open for fourthcoming box set which will include a new edition of the Big Lebowski. Also, Fargo and Miller's Crossing.

Citizen Kane
Casablanca
The Third Man
Touch of Evil
The Man with No Name Trilogy + Once Upon a Time in the West
Midnight Cowboy
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
Glengarry Glen Ross (based on your list, yuou'd probably love this)
Grosse Point Blank + High Fidelity
Lawrence of Arabia
Bonnie and Clyde
The Professional + The Fifth Element
Clerks + Chasing Amy
City of God
Being John Malkovich + Adaptation + Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Shaun of the Dead
Before Sunrise + Before Sunset

I like a lot of movies, and am getting into new genres all the time, so nothing is out of the question.

PCU

In the Line of Fire
A Few Good Men
Donnie Brasco
Gladiator

Which ones are you looking to get rid of? PM me if you don't want to post.

Every movie I wanted to post had already been mentioned in this thread, then I remembered: Deep Cover. This one gets almost no recognition, but I thought it was great. If I had to compare it to something, Heat is the first thing that comes to mind, if only because of the crime theme and the low-key pacing.

I realized this a little too late. Thank you for the advice. I wish they would let me edit my original post, but it says time expired. Is there any other way to do this?
