I have just ventured along to my local casino to participate in my first B&M tournament. It is a small buy in pot limit tournament. The blinds start quite high and everyone plays rather wild so it is a bit of a crap shot. I would appreciate any comments that would help me adjust.
The structure is:
The comp usually gets about 35-40 players.
Start with 1000 chips and the blinds start at 25-50. You can re-buy for the same price when below half, and can top up at the end of the re-buy period of 1 hour.
The blinds increase every 30mins. This means they are 50-100 after 30mins, and to 100-200 just after the re-buy period ends.
Nearly every one plays very wild and loose, particularly during the re-buy period. Probably around 5 people seeing the flop most of the time. I don't think I saw a single hand decided pre-flop and it was very rare for a hand not to go to a show down - usually with a couple of people all in. The prize pool shows that on average there are about 4 re-buys/top ups per person.
Any suggestions on how to maximise your chances in this type of tournament?
My initial thoughts were not to gamble early on with everyone else or try and make any moves, but to simply wait until I had a premium hand and can get it all in.
There still seemed little scope for imaginative plays later on and so agressiveness seems to be the key. Alway trying to be the better and avoid calling.
