View Full Version : Paradise - A newbie's observations

I'm new to the poker-scene and have only played on Poker Stars. Today i downloaded, observed, deposited and played at Paradise...my 2nd online casino experience.

-- Where are the players?? it's Sunday afternoon and I count around 150 on the HE tables (on the pay-side....who cares about the play-money thing). And there is only 1 Oma H/L game going (.5/1) and no Omaha regular games.

-- Not that i care about such things...but I find it interesting that I cant put the chat-window up without blocking buttons or someone's cards or something.

-- Did someone say slow?? Hands per hour typically listed in the 20's or 30's. I feel like I'm watching PGA-golf in slow-motion with no sound.

-- I do like the shot-clock feature for players on turn. This sports-on-TV feature reminds me of the NBA on TNT.

-- Seems there are no tourneys...and no way to play 2
tables at once (or even observe a 2nd table while playing). Maybe there's something I'm missing. If i'm not running this at the same time as PokerStars maybe i'll find something to do between hands...like re-set all my living room furniture or read War and Peace or something. Hey guys...Wake me when it's my turn, ok??

-- Finally, the players. Wow. i am simply blown away by the quality (or lack thereof) of some of these guys. When it said in the lobby 70-80% players seeing the flop (or higher) I thought it must be exaggeration. First Oma H/L hand I observed saw almost everyone in the flop...as advertised. And some guy took it all the way to the end with something like 5,7,10,K or something (I don't know...maybe he had an 8 instead of a 10 which would still be equally unplayable). He was not in BB and did not match the board really...but he called (and occasionally raised) right to the end. Naturally he lost...and I started to wonder if Paradise plants the worst players possible when there is a first-time observer like yours truly. Is it a conspiracy??

-- Umm, how is it possible for a table with 0 players to have an average pot of $20? Interesting math connundrum to be sure. That's why I wonder about the accuracy of their hands/flop stats (and hands/hr).

-- It may take an eternity to reach the bonus cash-out requirement of 20x..but I'm in no hurry and my main incentive was to expand my internet-poker horizons a bit...not bonus-whore.

-- I read their points program thing. Every $10 bet earns 1 point. Earn 100 points and get a whole dollar! How funny. Better than nothing I suppose.

-- Right now playing ultra-tight HE and waiting to take in my first pot. It's a waiting game to be sure. My KK got taken on the river by someone who hit spades on turn and river for flush. When 6 or 7 players are staying in with weak hands then you're going to lose a few like that. But the minimal investment for decent odds on large pots is certainly worthwhile...no matter how long it takes to get to the showdown.
Update - my A5 unsuited (big-blind) just split a pot with another A5. Why the other two players stayed in it to the river with an Ace and precious little else on the board boggles the mind...
Another Update - just won another hand seeing various raises while holding a Jack-hi flush (and pair of 3's on board). With that much raising I would typically think twice with just a jack-high...but I have to learn to re-adjust my interpretations of raises in this game (i.e. - it does not significantly increase the chances that someone has the nuts) and am certainly glad I rolled the dice on that one. One other player had an 8-hi flush...the other 2 must have had less than that.

Thanks to the 2+2 crew for mentioning the fish-ability of Paradise in old posts that I stumbled on.
Will likely try some other sites in the future including Paradise (and maybe Party because their commercial on WPT cracks me up so much).

May start another thread about cash-out ease or difficulties at various sites...I know it's a tired subject...but those of us who are new to this internet-poker thing are a little skittish about whether or not we'll ever see that money again, or how safe the credit-card is..etc etc. Even though it's probably far more dangerous to read or input my credit-card number over the phone when paying my electric-bill or something.
except for a handful of complaints that I've read, it seems most players I've chatted with have nothing but good things to say about the ease and speed for receiving their cash-outs.

thanks for reading...

Nothing you said in your post describes Paradise at all. Mabye put a cap on that tube of glue or open a window so you know what site you are actually playing on /forums/images/icons/smile.gif.

What you talkin' 'bout Willis?

I've been on Paradise playing O8 off and on all afternoon and there have been at least 10 tables running for most of that time. Didn't pay attention to what was going on in HE but somehow you got your wires crossed wrt the Omaha 8 section.

I meant Pacific...not Paradise.
Glue gives me a headache...but maybe I would have gotten it right if I sniffed occasionally.
Honestly, can you blame me?? the game is so slow it put me to sleep and I mixed up the names.

I tried to edit the post and title but it wouldn't let me because the time allowable to do so had expired (or something like that).
If one of the admins would like to change it then feel free.

Apologize for the confusion.

yes Pacific a rounders heaven. I think jack 2 off gets pot odds there at the 15/30 table. Don't knock that place it's probably the weakest site out there above .50/1 or pokerroom's 1/2. I think all burned out paradise players should play there and scoop up the abundant, fish. Vasco D'Gama discovered this site in 1650 and not a rounder has been there since.......
