I am shooting a student film next weekend and need some ideas for a prop for one of my actresses. One of the scenes in the movie the main actress is sitting on a bench reading a book in a metropolitan park. She is a serial killer in this story....I was wondering what would be a good book for a serial killer to be reading...something ironic? Can you guys think of any books that might stand out to the audience...to give the scene an interesting touch?
Thanks!

Farewell to Arms (also used in Evil Dead 2)

This entirely depends on the personality and background of the serial killer.

American Psycho?

Probably the best choice for an unsuspecting looking killer to be reading. Everyone in the audience should get the joke.

This is much better. I can't believe people are suggesting "American Psycho" when the OP asked for something ironic.

I'd go with Chicken Soup for the Soul, or maybe Girl, He's Just Not That Into You.

The Collector, I forget who wrote it.

There was an article in Maxim a while back about how a bunch of serial killers all read this book and got their ideas from it.

How about Hellmuth's book. I hear that book has made a number of people contemplate suicide. Thats SORT OF ironic right?

In a more serious tone, I think a self help book is really what you're looking for. Not necessarily a chicken soup one, but any of the "How to love yourself" books (not THOSE kind of "love yourself" books....you dirty OOT minds)

i suggest scaping the whole serial killer idea. all the professors i had in undergrad and grad film school said they were so sick of seeing many of the boys in the class pick a violent/murder subject for their short films. it's just cliche and silly.

If anything you should go with an idea of how the first 5.5 minutes of the short lead you to believe that one person is the crazy mofo and then flip the world upside down and have it be the 13 year old girl playing with Barbie. Now there's a short I'm ready to watch.

um, cause don't you think it's creepy that a serial killer would be reading a book written from the perspective of rabbits?

Initially I thought 'Bible, hey that's smart' but on second thought....I don't think that is really all that ironic. I think a lot of crazy people commit strange crimes because of the Bible. I like the Bernstein Bears one a little..Haha.

Thanks for all the replies guys...I've got a lot of options to work with now....
The story is ironic...not the run of the mill violent/murder short...its different...when I'm finished editing it I will post it on the web with a link.

BTW...I already used the Bible in my first short...sort of in a twisted way...so I don't want to use it again.
Thanks again!

The Da Vinci Code.

After I read it, I damn near killed everyone who said it was a good book.

Though if I were making a student film about a murderer, I might be inclined to use this book (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0345338146/104-2315531-0234367?v=glance). /images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Honestly though, if she's attractive I might go with Somerset's 'The Razor's Edge'. If you're just going for a laugh, I might use the self-help books suggested above. I wouldn't use 'American Psycho', no need to hit people over head.
