View Full Version : MLL Week 3 - Luck of the Irish II

He did it again!

The Micro Limits League is a heads-up league in the style of college football. All players are free schedule their own games and determine their own path through the league. Your results are based on two things and two things only : how well you played and how tough your opponents were. There's no handicapping by ending up with a tough path through the bracket, and you'll never have to be concerned with getting your results in by a specified time. This is your league.

How it works - Visit the MLL thread for a given week, where you will find a list of all MLL members. If you'd like to challenge someone, the recommended way to set it up is to send them a PM on the subject and leave them plenty of ways to contact you. Or you can hammer it out through the PM. The time of the game is entirely up to you, the only thing required for the league is that you play a 25BB .02/.04 freezeout. That way no one's losing more than $1 at a time. At the completion of the game, it's customary for the loser to post in that week's thread saying who they lost to. If the loser forgets to post it within a few hours, the winner can post it. At that time, I'll plug your game into my incredibly complicated matrix, run it through many filters, translate it to French, and include it in the next week's wrap up.

MLL Week 2 slowed down a bit from Week 1 as expected. A few moves up and down but the standings remain essentially the same. I set the bar at 4 games played to make the rankings this week. Let's see where everyone's at.

Next week will begin the first of a few ideas I have to make matches more interesting and unique. For now, in week 3, just play whoever you'd like.

I'm actually 7-6, won the two I've played this week, both are posted.

Adding that to the list now. This is the last week I'm going to edit the standings after posting. Your match against sl72, when he posted it it was just a "oh i lost to slamhound too" comment in the middle of another post. If people are not posting results clearly and concisely, they're simply going to be ignored.

Comments: Anything interesting goes here.

If results aren't posted like this or at least easily discernable as a match, they'll be ignored starting this week. That means if you post saying

"i cant believe how lucky i just got against wook!"

Then you're going to be sorely disappointed when you don't get credit for the win. I'm not going to psychoanalyze every post in this thread trying to decide if you're talking about a new match, an old one, or what. Post your results clearly.

MrWookie47

Also, can you announce in advance what the minimum number of games to be ranked will be? This will encourage people to get out and play right away rather than slacking off for a week and then making an unfortunate discovery.

Paxosmotic
10-15-2005, 12:13 PM
With everyone's permission I'd like to make the minimum amount of games 2 per week. So next week would be 6, then 8, etc.

I'm trying to maintain an unofficial webpage (http://www.math.ucsd.edu/~awong/poker/mll/mll.html) to help Pax by keeping a second set of eyes on everything. I'm going to double-check the match list later today because I think I'm missing a few. Everyone should keep write down their matches somewhere so that errors can be caught early. Otherwise, we can have a real mess in a couple weeks when memories start to fade.

In a ferocious 214 hand struggle for me to get back to even then lose.

And then just when I thought my lucksackery was running out I find good old Jaxup and he boost my confidence. Acctually it was all the cards, but it felt nice after he payed the dealer for my loss to trainslayer last night.

winner: nomadtla

It lasted about 5 minutes and a whopping 23 hands (may be a record). I decided since I had to post the loss I would post this match for Jax since he said he was gonna run off and cry for a while, what a baby /images/graemlins/grin.gif.

I set a record for flopping two pair in the match vs. nomadtla. Just to rub it in I flopped 2pair in both of the last two hands (although he rivered a higher 2pair in the first of the two to stay alive)

The best hand was when I flopped top pair and he flopped 2pair and I rivered a third king /images/graemlins/smile.gif

/edit I guess he was saving his luck for the match vs. Jaxup

I'm gonna be out of pocket for the weekend, so my MLL duties Saturday will consist of posting an updated rankings, the roster for the week, and that's it. Week 5 will begin 'unique' games.

Here is the first idea I have for a unique set of games, and if anyone has any others, present them here and we can work them in. The first is the "MLL Challenge", which will consist of me randomly selecting groups of 6 from the MLL roster. This means that the 6 most active might be in the same group, or that you may land in a group with 3 people that haven't played a match yet. But after the groups are released, it is up to everyone in that group to contact other people in that group to matches. You will have two weeks to play everyone, and only your FIRST match against them will count. The winner of each group will be the person with the best record, having played 3+ games. After those two weeks, the winners will advance to the Champions Carnival, which will be the same thing, where we'll crown the winner. This will be happening WHILE other matches are being played, so not only will they count towards your ranking, but you'll be playing regular season matches at the same time.

I'm also thinking of the 'MLL Excite Series', which will be a one day event where we all get together and blitz our way through as many matches as possible. I'll plan it out a few weeks in advance, but I think it would be a good way just to get everyone together and playing some matches.

Does anyone else have some ideas to keep the season fresh as we go?

[/ QUOTE ]
I don't have any ideas, but I think yours sound good and I'm sure others will be able to come up with things.

I feel like there is a certain amount of concern in the MLL right now that enthusiasm may be waning. I, for one, would like to say that this is absolutely not so in my case. (Oh yeah, you're going to listen to the guy with 2 matches)

It is killing me to not get more HU matches in, and, in fact, I've barely played poker at all this month. It is simply due to unfortunate timing regarding my work that I have been almost completely unable to make time for poker this month.

I expect to be VERY active (I'll save you the FYP - sexually) as soon as things settle down at work. I anticipate this will be in 2-4 weeks.

But maybe I'm the only one who has this sort of situation. A lot of people did play a bunch of matches in week 1 and I'm guessing not nearly as many in subsequent weeks.

Ideas - okay, I've been thinking about it while I've been typing...

Maybe we could have some daily contests. Designate a day and whoever wins a match in the fewest hands (or the shortest time, or wins the biggest pot, or the greatest % of hands, etc.), receives some sort of individual award (although what in the world you could want more than $1 is entirely beyone my rather significant powers of comprehension). This could be just some simple recognition within the ML forum - maybe a color or something. Who knows what the mods can do? (For an example of what they can't do, please take a look at this.) (http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/showthreaded.php?Cat=&amp;Number=3730521&amp;page=1&amp;view=c ollapsed&amp;sb=5&amp;o=14&amp;fpart=1) Sorry GregJ - don't mean to tease you (btw I don't have Absolute, so I can't help you). I would lose all respect for you if I hadn't read so many excellent old posts by you today. /images/graemlins/smirk.gif I just thought maybe the ML forum could get a good laugh out of that.

The thing is, it's somewhat redundant to start playing for a prize as we're already playing for something. No, not the dollar. We're playing to be crowned the MLL champion. But's that's so far off in the future that I think people have trouble staying motivated and excited. So maybe introducing some smaller prizes from time to time would spice things up.

Edited to add: Yes, looking at AaronW's website it is clear that the number of matches being played has steadily declined. I looked at just the people ranked in the top 10 and NOT A SINGLE ONE OF THEM played as many matches in week 2 as they did in week 1. In some cases, it's not even close. Some people started off strong and have not played since. Do you see why?

I am holding steady at 1 / week and intend to fulfill my week 3 quota soon...

BTW - Aaron - the links to the Full League Records After Weeks 1 and 2 both go to the records after week 1.

PokerStars 0.02/0.04 Hold'em (2 handed) FTR converter on zerodivide.cx (http://www.zerodivide.cx/converter)

Preflop: Hero is BB with 8/images/graemlins/club.gif, 2/images/graemlins/diamond.gif.
Button calls, Hero checks.

Flop: (2 SB) 2/images/graemlins/spade.gif, 8/images/graemlins/diamond.gif, 6/images/graemlins/spade.gif <font color="#0000FF">(2 players)</font>
<font color="#CC3333">Hero bets</font>, Button calls.

Turn: (2 BB) Q/images/graemlins/spade.gif <font color="#0000FF">(2 players)</font>
<font color="#CC3333">Hero bets</font>, <font color="#CC3333">Button raises</font>, <font color="#CC3333">Hero 3-bets</font>, <font color="#CC3333">Button caps</font>, Hero calls.

River: (10 BB) T/images/graemlins/club.gif <font color="#0000FF">(2 players)</font>
<font color="#CC3333">Hero bets $0.01 (All-In)</font>, Button calls.

Final Pot: 10.50 BB

Results in white below: <font color="#FFFFFF">
Hero has 8c 2d (two pair, eights and twos).
Button has 6c 8s (two pair, eights and sixes).
Outcome: Button wins 10.50 BB. </font>

After getting raised on the turn, I decided I was probably pot committed with only 3 BB remaining. Maybe I could have pulled out something with 5 cents, but I doubt it.

Does anyone else have some ideas to keep the season fresh as we go?

What about a double shoot out type series? Maybe separate groups within that tourney? Then the winners bracket plays out and the losers bracket plays out, then at the very end there is a match between the winners of the two groups?

Just an idea.

Would it be ok to choose a preference as far as groups go for night and day? With the different time zones and stuff, oh all right, when my wife gets home I can't play. If not that's O.K. I mean, I'm not that whipped. Ooh, here she comes, see you later.

I don't really see the point. For one, the games are voluntary. For two, you've got 24 hours in a day, 14 days in the contest, that's a long time. It's not a bad idea, I just don't think it's entirely necessary. Play when and if you can, when it's good for you. If you can't find a time that works for you and a particular person, just don't play them.

I don't like the first idea. Given the number of names on the roster and the number of people who are *ACTUALLY* playing matches, most of these six-somes are probably going to result in only three or four matches (out of the potential 15). If you wanted to do something like that, you should see who is actually interested first, and match them up randomly from there.

The second idea sounds better. There's less structure and less coordination, so things are bound to run more smoothly. Because of the limitations at Stars (5 tables only), we may need to flood the Prima play money tables instead. I don't know how many tables they have over there and if they spawn new ones to fit the need (I don't have a Prima account, either), so this should be investigated first.

Perhaps all you need is a "suggested matchup" for everyone as part of the weekly update. This way, there's at least a gentle nudge for people to send some PMs and try to set up matches. This also takes some of the (potentially perceived) awkwardness of trying to find matches with people you don't know, especially of those who don't post as much.

Just FYI, right now I count 7 20/40 play money tables on Prima.

I wanted to add in that if we do something involving the most ________ (biggest pot won, fastest match, fewest hands, biggest % of pots won, etc.), we'd clearly have to include the best bad beat.

I figure we could determine this one of two ways or have separate things for each of the following:

Most statistically improbable (e.g. a runner runner victory would be pretty strong here).

Bad beat at a critical point (e.g. you get all-in way behind and suck-out and come back to win the match). This would be subjective so we'd have to vote or something. Problem is, maybe we don't want everyone posting bad beats in the thread...

Anyway, just an idea.

Really all I want to do is get people playing matches again. I feel retarded for griping about people playing 8 matches a week, because now people aren't playing at all.
