View Full Version : Top (But Low) Pair, Top Kicker, Out of Position

Hello-

I’ve been reviewing my game for holes I can plug, and have come across this particular scenario often enough that I’d like to run it past the group and get some additional thoughts.

Typical setup: NL Hold’em, $100 - $200 buy in, $1/$2 Blinds.
Stacks: Even, around buy-in amount.

I am in the BB holding A-Xo, where X is a mid card (say T-8).

4-5 Limpers to me and I check.

I pair my X on the flop. Other two cards are undercards. Flop is rainbow (no flush draws). Maybe a straight draw (not always, especially if X is higher.)

I bet out for 75 – 100% of pot. All players fold except one (usually in late position) who re-raises 5x my bet.

So, an example of this scenario

Stacks $100
Blinds $1/ $2

3 Limpers, SB Completes, Hero Checks

Pot $10

Flop T /images/graemlins/spade.gif, 5 /images/graemlins/heart.gif, 2 /images/graemlins/club.gif

SB Checks
Hero Bets $10
Fold to Button, who re-raises to $60.
SB Folds.

When I don’t have any reads on the player (either they are not in my PT database or I am at a B&M and don’t know the player), I’ve been laying it down.

My questions for the group:

- Is that too weak a play?
- If on-line, what PT stats/rangers would you look at to help your decision?
- Am I making a mistake by not raising pre-flop?
- Should my bet on the flop be stronger?
- Any other thoughts/suggestions.

Thanks everyone!
