View Full Version : 2xBB in SB. Terrible to open push 72o?

This is at the local bar tournament, so I really don't care what the right move was there, but moreso what I should do in this situation in a tournament I really care a lot about winning.

The blinds are 100/200. I have 400 left after posting the SB. It's folded to me. I have 72o. I figure with 2xBB left, I'm going to have to get lucky anyway, so I might as well try to do it now while I already have some money in the pot and I know it will be heads-up. Of course the BB has to call with anything.

So I pushed.

Bad? Good? Really bad?

Debatable. I'd say the bigger question is how did you get in that situation. Unless you lost an all-in against a slightly smaller stack, you shouldn't be facing this situation.

yeah, that's what happened. I didn't want to post a bad beat story though.

Just checking.

My initial thought was that you should wait for a slightly better hand if there's no ante, since the blinds won't reach you again for a while, but the truth is just stealing the blinds (or doubling up) once per round isn't going to get you anywhere. You need to do it multiple times to build up a stack, so you might as well start trying now.

Fold. You are getting 5-3 pot odds and 72o is worse than against a random hand. Villain is getting 3-1 pot odds, so has to call. You are getting 37.5% pot odds and you are 35% against a random hand. Since you are no one before had anything, there are more high cards left for villain to have. Unless villain is weak/tight enough that there is a decent chance he will fold, you should fold.

You should have opportunities to value bet a decent hand in the next rotation. You can also call a raise and get 2-1 pot odds if no one else calls.

Okay, so what's the worst hand you'd push?

Anything but complete junk. A card 9 or higher, connectors or gappers, suited cards. 54o, 64o, 74o, 92o, 52s, 72s would be minimum pushing hands. You are about 38% against a random hand with these.

How many players left and what is payout structure?
