I am staring right at the certificate of authenticity and its the wrong amount of numbers. I am trying to install microsoft word from the works 2000 suite.

Sounds like you're looking at a Windows certificate, not an Office key. If it's Office 2000, I think a string of all 1's works, if not it's a string of all 1's with a 2 on the end.
/images/graemlins/shocked.gif That works for Office 2000 too? wow...I used that back then for Office 97. Good protection Microsoft!

It says works certificate of authenticity. But its 20 numbers instead of 25 and contains the letters OEM. The string of ones didnt work.
Try OTHER places to find this cd key. /images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Works is not Office.

Word is part of office. They don't make a separate version just to ship with Works.

No they didn't.
But clearly the Works serial number won't work. He needs the Office serial number.

Any recommendations on where else to look? I even tried calling microsoft to explain my situation but the help line is "fee based" wtf.

Maybe he got "Microsoft Works Suite", which does include Microsoft Word 2000.
