In HPFAP, S&M say that there are situations where you may have the best hand, but if you don't, you have little chance of improving. In that case you should bet and hope everyone folds. If anyone calls, though, then you give up and check/fold on later streets. They provide an example where you're in the BB with 66, the pot was raised preflop, and the flop is ATx rainbow. Their advice is for you to bet.

My question is, if you're going to bet and then check/fold, what is the difference between this and a pure bluff? It seems to me that if you had 87s on this board, you could play it the same way. The only difference I can think of is that if someone calls you on the flop and you have 66, there's a tiny chance that 4th and 5th streets will be checked around and you could have the best hand. But if someone calls you on the flop, then you're probably beat anyway.

Can anyone explain this?
