View Full Version : Super World Class Smart

In a thread in SMP Sklansky said the following:

[ QUOTE ]

Only in some very specialized endeavors do I consider myself super world class smart. Such as teaching moderately intelligent eight year olds to do word problems that require quadratic equations. I'm also more likely to come up with clever shortcuts or creative analogies regarding certain types of problems, than most of those people who are a little smarter than me.

[/ QUOTE ]

It most likely would be something very specific as above for obvious reasons. For example I would never consider saying "doing physics" or "teaching" or even "teaching children gymnastics" despite considering myself to be very good or excellent at all of those things.

So, is there something at which you consider yourself to be world class and why?

(David what, if any, are the others for you?)

One reason you are probably not a world class poker player is lack of mastery of many games. I know nothing about you, but if you can't hold your own in a high limit mixed game you're not a world class poker player.

I am super world-class smart in wasting time.

FWIW, I think this idea is just plain wrong when it comes to intellectual endeavors. People are really good at things, as David might be at teaching math shortcuts, but the truly smart (of whom I only know a couple, and I am exposed to the smartest people in the world), are so able to grasp concepts the first time, it's scary. These people don't need background, because they can infer it. One of my labmates is just like this, and it's a wonderful thing to be able to talk to him about things. I'm a sharp guy and a good scientist, but next to him, I'm a retard.

Ah! you just reminded me of one, playing NFL Blitz 99.

In addition I would say maybe teaching gymnastics to beginnig level boys, and certainly not yet, but maybe teaching in general if I do decide to go into the field and spend my life at it. I think I'm pretty close at specifically (somehow) understanding what is causing someone to not understand something and explaining it to them in a way that minimizes that.

JaBlue
10-12-2005, 03:05 AM
Boris, I think I might qualify for the person you describe in that I can intuitively grasp a lot of things without working or trying to that other people seem to have a ton of trouble with and I just don't get what's so hard about it to them.

I don't think I'm world-class at anything in particular though. Maybe I could be and maybe a lot of other people here could be too but it seems like the major determinant in whether or not someone is world class is their determination to be world class in that particular thing. Of course you need to have a certain amount of natural ability - some people just won't understand things no matter how hard they try - but I think as long as you're over whatever the threshold is for that amount of ability, it's just a matter of desire.

From how you describe yourself it seems like you will never be world class at anything like me. Of course, that's just fine.

[/ QUOTE ]

Geez, and to think that's what I was going to say I was great at. My girlfriend likens me to Sherlock Holmes because I can deduce so much.

My favorite story was in March, we were in Singapore with her twin sister. I was in the bathroom, and I overheard sister say to gf "Hey, I have those, too".

I shouted "quit talking about _____ _____", and sister blew up...."Who the hell are you, and how the xxxx did you know that's what I was talking about?"

It's amazing how much a person can realize about the world if they are willing to put themselves in somebody elses shoes. This goes for card games too.

The simple act of writing this sentence ensures you cannot be "super world class smart" in the realm of communication and/or composition. You could argue this would be a requirement for being "super world class smart" in and of itself, as communication is a fundamental litmus test.

My awesome natural reasoning power combined with years of hardcore training in front of a television have made me super world class smart at figuring out what has happened in parts of a movie or television show that I have missed. I can start watching a show in the middle and almost immediately explain who everybody is and what's going on.

Hmmm, is that a reflection on my skill or is it that television and movies are so predictable?

Anyway, I know I am super world class smart in this area because I can do this better than anybody I know. And I know, like, more than 8 people.

Most of the time, the guys winning the Nobel prize didn't actually do any of the work or generate the majority of the ideas going into the project that won the Nobel Prize. What happens is the postdocs and graduate students in the lab come up with something and the head of the lab gets credit for it, since he/she is the one going around presenting the data. Yay academic research science.

OK, I'm excluding savants and people of that sort. Put it this way. I went to a medium-sized high school in a medium-sized town. I was by far the best at math, the best writer, fastest reader, etc. at my high school and probably in my town. Through college and law school, I have met many people who are much, much better than me at math, much better than me at writing and can read faster. I have never, however, met anyone who can even come close to my knowledge of geography.

I know this, but the advisors do have the ideas most cases, and this is not to be discounted, along with providing the labspace, money, and most importantly, the other people (the best advisors get the best people together and often these teams are what makes the project). The best experiments are ones that are so simple, but people don't see them. The people who do the work for the Nobel usually come out OK, though.

The best story I have heard (which may or may not be true) is that some old chemist won the Nobel awhile back. I don't remember who it is. Anyway, at a speech he was giving about it, he turned to his old, far more out-spoken friends on the faculty and said with sincerity, "I guess you guys can't call me stupid anymore." Awesome.

Oh, so you're excluding the Super World Class people???

[/ QUOTE ]

I'm excluding those who aren't otherwise "normal." Many of those who have the entire atlas memorized probably can't function well socially, etc.

Also, what is "world class" here, anyway? Top 1%? Top 0.01%?

Even including savants with eidetic memories, I'm willing to assert that I'm pretty close to the top.

[/ QUOTE ]

i think top 2 % qualifies

[/ QUOTE ]

top 2% isn't even close. if you are in mensa are you considered world class smart? no way.

there are 6 billion people in the world, i think you would have to be in the top 500 in some field to be considered world class. that would come out to the top .0000008333% or so.

if you did 2% then where would be 60 million world class doctors/lawyers/basketball players in the world.

[/ QUOTE ]

because there are 3 Billion Doctors? There are some categories in which "world class" includes every living person like world class tall guy, or world class smart guy. But there are many other categories that are specific to a field. I'd say that the field of Baseball players includes College, minor league and Major league. In this case, world class would be all major leaguers. If that doesn't sit with you, than world-class means even more. World class means the top 2% of the top 2% and world class baseball players are now (potential) Hall of Famers - nothing less.

So does world class mean top 2% in a field or top .02%?

BTW, I vote for JakeTheBake and Jason_T as being the only two world class OOTiots. If they want to put that on their resume, they can.

I'm amazing at writing 1 page literature essays in under 30 minutes without actually reading the subject material. Don't know why, just am.

I am the best beer pong player that I have ever encountered and it's not even close. Over a fairly large sample size I shoot in the area of 80%.

Arkanoid. I owned 9 of the top ten scores on the machine at school, and my lowest was almost double the tenth score. By the end of the year I could play all two hours of lunch/study hall on 75 cents, so the other seniors would simply double team me if I got there first and pull me away from the game.

So, is there something at which you consider yourself to be world class and why?

[/ QUOTE ]

i've come to realize that while i am pretty good at many things, generally above average, there is nothing that i am really excellent at. sadly i am below average at life. i'm going to die alone, that much i know.

World class is .01% or less.

[/ QUOTE ]

I would say much less. World class to me means top 50-100 people in the world at something.
