I think it very unlikely that the U.S. will invade Iraq and oust Hussein. To do so would require a ground war that would involve urban fighting in places like Baghdad. I don't see the American public going along with such a scenario.

Secondly, there is no opposition leader to put in his place.

Thirdly, NATO ally Turkey would not be happy with a Chaotic Iraq from where Kurdish resistance migth carve out a state and thereby cause an internal crisis in Turkey.

Fourthly, Powel has shown that he does not believe in American unilateralism and any invasion of Iraq would certainly have no international support.

Fifth, a destroyed Iraq would create a vacuum that the Iranians could quickly fill. Something all the more likely due to the fact the majority of Iraq's population are Shi'ites.

If irrefutable evidence can be produced to show that Iraq has supported al Qaeda, this all may change.

Powell has very recently strongly supported Bush's 'axis of evil' concept, and Powell also now actually leads the Bush camp in believing that Saddam and his regime absolutely must be removed.

The question of a replacement government is a very real concern and, until resolved, will probably forestall any invasion.
