Name a song (preferably from the mid-80's to mid-90's that would be embarassing for you to come out and say that you really like.

I'll start (be honest now):

Girl's Just Wanna Have Fun. Oh...man...that was theraputic. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

This reminds me of my old boss. 40 year old guy with a bone disease who spends a lot of money on medical expenses. Anyway me and another guy were talking about American Idol one night at work and he came into the discussion and somehow Kelly Clarkson came up and Dennis goes "Yeah, I mean I bought her CD, but I'm just not that impressed with it." Me and my buddy went silent. lol.

To think a 40-year old man who needs to save money for medical expenses actually shelled out $15 for this CD just blows my mind.

It should be noted that he was listening to Macy Gray "Why didnt you call me?" one day when we drove to lunch. I think he may have been gay.

In high school, I was into reggae and rock, and always bagged on the euro trash pop music that my friends listened to. then, a few years ago when my wife and i started dancing, i found that a lot of that stuff has a very cool beat (cha cha). because of this, I'd say The Promise and Bizzare Love Triangle.

also, that 80's euro-pop-trash song with the cool animation/live action video. I can't even remember the song, but the video was cool enough for me to say that I like the music (as retarted as that may be).

"Raindrops", by Dee Clark.

Oh, Raindrops

Falling from my eyes.

Since my love has left me
I'm so all alone
I would bring her back to me
But I don't know where she's gone
I don't know where she's gone.

There must be a cloud in my head
Rain keeps falling from my eye-eyes
Oh, no it can't be teardrops
For a man ain't supposed to cry.

So it must be raindrops
So many raindrops
It feels like raindrops falling from my eye-eyes

4) Smokey and the Bandit soundtrack, song goes "East bound and down, loaded up and trucking, we gonna do what they say can't be done..."

[/ QUOTE ]

This is a fine set of choices. It's easy to see why you might like these songs and why you'd be embarassed by them...except of course for Tainted Love. This song is spectacular. People who don't like it probably deserve to be institutionalized. Now "Institutionalized" would have been another fine choice to put on this list. "No, you're not thinking, you're on drugs. Mom just give me a Pepsi please. All I want it a Pepsi, and she wouldn't give it to me."

I haven't heard that song since I was like 10 years old, but I loved it back then. Awesome tune.

That song makes me want to skewer my own eardrums. The first time I heard it I immediately tried to gouge out my short-term memory.

Africa by Toto.

[/ QUOTE ]

That is one of the more awful songs of all time. I think we have a winner.

[/ QUOTE ]

Whoa, just giving this thread a quick skim. Blarg, for once, you are way off the mark here. We are talking that song, I something something in aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaf-rica, right? If so, that song is great.

[/ QUOTE ]

Gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
aint nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
God bless the rains down in aaaaaaaaaaaaafrica
something something something things I never something.

Virginia Coalition has a cover, so does Howie Day. Now speaking of music to be embarrassed about, how 'bout that Howie...

hear the drums echoing tonight
But she hears only whispers of some quiet conversation
She's coming in twelve-thirty flight
Her moonlit wings reflect the stars that guide me towards
salvation
I stopped an old man along the way
Hoping to find some old forgotten words or ancient melodies
He turned to me as if to say: "Hurry boy, it's waiting there for
you"

[Chorus:]
It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never had

The wild dogs cry out in the night
As they grow restless longing for some solitary company
I know that I must do what's right
Sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti
I seek to cure what's deep inside, frightened of this thing that
I've become

[Repeat chorus]

[Instrumental break]

Hurry boy, she's waiting there for you

[Repeat chorus]

OK, good. I was pretty sure I should be embarrased about that.

Un-interesting anecdote: I've always been horrible at deciphering lyrics by ear, and when I first heard this I thought Patrick Monohan said "Van Halen is over-rated" instead of "That heaven is over-rated". This led me to have a great deal of respect for Mr. Monahan, both for recognizing a truthitude, and for having the balls to say it on record.

Then I found out the real lyrics and was like "Oh... oh well". lol.

I really like Sailing by Christopher Cross. For some reason is voice is pretty soothing. I also like Chris Isaak, I would normally never admit to either, but what the hell.

[/ QUOTE ]

I love "Sailing".

I was also thinking of "Always something there to remind me" and "Walking on broken glass"

Not sure about Sailing, but the other two songs are definitely solid.

The only song in this thread that people should actually be embrassed to like is that Avril crap.

There's a lot of really amazing songs listed here. Like who doesn't love "Tainted Love".

The only stuff I'm slightly embrassed to like is some of my uber nerdy whiteboy hip-hop, and that's just because I hate conforming to the stereotype that much.
